 Over the top (OTT) media service covers a wide range of online content
providers that provide streaming media as a product.
 OTT usually refers to video-on-demand platforms, but it can also cover areas
like audio streaming, online voice-calling solutions, and messaging services.
 The OTT service doesn’t require the traditional media distribution channels like
cable TV providers and telecommunications networks.
 This service can be accessed as long as you have access to internet connectivity.
OVER THE TOP (OTT)
 With the increasing usage of the internet each day and multiple
genres of media and content being released, the Government had to
maintain the standards of traditional and digital/online content.
 Multiple complaints and issues had been raised by the people of the
country, concerning the things being shown online. Government sought
a third-party interference to maintain the content released.
 In India, OTT is the only platform that was self-regulatory, thus to
make it equivalent to similar platforms like television and radio, the
Government shifted the administration of this sector to MIB.

MIB SELF- REGULATION FOR OTT IN INDIA
On February 25, the government announced the new Information
Technology (Intermediary Guidelines and Digital Media Ethics Code)
Rules 2021, which introduced a 3-tier grievance redressal mechanism for
OTT platforms
CONTENT REGULATION
IN INDIA – AHEAD
1. Platform owners will have to classify their content according to
different age groups: “U" or universal rating, and others for 7+,
13+, 16+ and then 18+ age group.
2. Platforms will be required to implement parental locks for content
classified as U/A 13+ or higher, and reliable age verification
mechanisms for content classified as “A".
3. There are various categories of ratings now which may become
more cumbersome for the content creator as well as the platform.
Except animated films or series, all content currently on OTT
platforms may fall into the U/A 16+ or the A category.
4. The players and creators will have to probably re-look at the kind
of content they want to make since these ratings will directly impact
the storytelling and the commercials involved.
