Reflection N°1 “The English Language”

After reading and analyzing the chapter called “The English Language”, it could be
noticed that the study of the history of the English language is an important subject, that a
future teacher of English may know, so it becomes an essential issue for English as a
Foreign Language teachers' formation process; it is really important to have knowledge
about this topic in order to be competent teacher, in the future, with a solid base.

Throughout the activity of preparing the main maps and the study of different
sources and related information I have learned important enlightenments about the
relationship among languages in terms of their context and the influence of it in their
development. I also learned a lot of details about the Germanic invasions on English land
and the contributions in terms of vocabulary that its invaders gave to the English
language, which were the triggering for various changes in the development of English. I
could realize that one of the most important invasions was the Roman Empire, which left
enormous consequences trough the world history, because the major influential causes in
the culture of a country are migrations, wars, conquests, etc. Languages in contact arise
many mutations which result in a language.

Before the study of lexical analysis I was not aware the importance of manage historical
facts in order to understand how languages interact and affect their development through
the time. Thanks to this course “Análisis Léxico del Inglés” I am able to understand the
historical issues which took place in U.K and model the English language as it is today. It
really caught my attention how these events may influence changes and development of
the English language; sincerely, I ignored many of the events studied and now. With this
knowledge, I can understand deeply how English has been originated and its following
development.

To learn all the historical events and their consequences on the development of the origin
of the English Language, help me to realize and understand the contents of other courses
or subjects in my study programme, which is “Cultura de los pueblos de habla Inglesa” in
which we also studied the Germanic invasions, in order to complement it with the course
“Análisi Léxico del Inglés”, in this way it is much more easier to understand the contents,
since they are related and they do not seem as an isolated signature to study.

Is totally important to know not only the proper knowledge of the language like, syntax,
morphology, grammar, phonetic, lexical, etc, but also is very important to know the
origins of languages in order to have clear theoretical foundations about where the words
come from and the influences they received
