“Oh GOSH! Reflecting on Hackteria's Collaborative Practices in a Global Do-It...
Reflection 2
1. Reflection
The Following reflection is based on the text “Sociolinguistic Patterns” and it has
been written with the intention of provide information about the different sociolinguistic
patterns, in what features they are based on and the relationship that exist between
them; moreover, describe and explain the features of the summary that was written
based on that text and the relevance that it has for the Course Lexical Analysis.
This text helps us as futures teachers to understand how the language can differ in
the way that it is expressed and used, depending on the different patterns that are
explained on the text and lately on the summary in a very brief and clearly way.
The Text “Sociolinguistic Patterns”explains how the English language is affected by
different patterns, which depending on the context can provide not only characteristic of
the language, but also characteristic of the people who speak it. A clear example of it is
the working class that is characterized by social class pattern. Another example is the ways
of speaking that most women have, that differentiate them from the man’s speech; the
first one is well-known for the use of higher-status variants more frequently than the
second one. This corresponds to Gender Pattern.
“Sociolinguistics Patterns” text is a contribution to the Lexical Analysis course,
helping us to achieve some of the objectives of the course such as identifies different
registers and pragmatic contexts; moreover to improve our knowledge about the English
language, not only through the history and development of the language, but also the
principal characteristics that it has depending on both internal and external patterns.
Another important point to develop, is that the text also can guide us in the sense
of what or which patterns we should have in mind at the moment of teaching; moreover if
in the future a student ask some of us why occur these differences in pronunciation or the
use of the grammatical structures, between others, in the same language, we will be able
to explain in details some of the reasons that are based on sociolinguistics patterns.
In my personal opinion the text that I choose reveals interesting information about
the English language in terms of the classifications that we can do by the study of the
different patterns and even when the English language is one, we can find a lot of varieties
of it that depends on the characteristic of the people who speak it, where they live, their
social class, age, gender, their style between others. The important point of that is the
English language is one, and no matter the differences that it has in some parts of the
Earth it is understandable due to the process of standardization that allowed a specific
language can be understood by everyone who speaks the language and also by people
who want to learn it.
