The Red Data Book is a document established in Russia in the 1960s to document rare and endangered species of animals, plants, and fungi found within Russia and its continental shelf. It was based on surveys conducted between 1961 and 1964. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) published its first Red List in 1964, which provides a comprehensive inventory of species' global conservation status and shows that the number of species considered at risk of extinction has increased significantly over time, with over 28,000 now at risk primarily due to human activities like overfishing, overhunting, and land development.
