multilingualism and English reading acquisition forms a complex and intriguing
dynamic.
● Recognizing the significance of this linguistic diversity, this research seeks to
delve into the intricacies of how exposure to multiple languages, including
regional dialects and English, shapes the reading capabilities of Filipino
students.
● By doing so, it aims not only to unravel the challenges posed by multilingual
environments but also to identify potential advantages that could be
harnessed to enhance English literacy.

English, influence the English reading acquisition of Filipino students?

4. RESEARCH DESIGN
This research adopts a qualitative case study design to deeply explore the
multifaceted aspects of multilingualism and its impact on English reading
acquisition. The case study approach allows for an in-depth examination within the
natural context of the Filipino education system, offering a holistic understanding of
the phenomena under investigation.

5. PARTICIPANTS
The study will involve primary school students (grades 4-6) from urban and
rural settings, selected purposefully to represent diverse linguistic and socio-
economic backgrounds. Additionally, English language teachers with varied
experience levels will be included to provide insights into instructional practices.

6. DATA COLLECTION
● Interviews: Conduct semi-structured interviews with students to gauge their
language exposure, reading habits, and perceptions of language influence on
reading.
● Observations: Observe English language classrooms to understand how
teachers incorporate multilingualism in reading instruction.
● Surveys: Administer surveys to both students and teachers to collect
quantitative data on language exposure, attitudes, and instructional practices.
● Document Analysis: Analyze English reading materials and curriculum
documents to assess cultural sensitivity and multilingual considerations.

7. DATA ANAYSIS
Data will be analyzed through thematic coding for qualitative data, focusing on
emerging patterns and themes related to the influence of multilingualism on English
reading acquisition. Quantitative data will be analyzed using statistical methods to
identify correlations and patterns among variables. The triangulation of data from
multiple sources will enhance the validity and reliability of the findings.
