Reading: A pathway
to achieving your
dreams.
BY: ONOME ONWAH
“
”
Reading is to the mind what
exercise is to the body.
—RICHARD STEELE
Exercising your mind simply means nourishing and feeding your mind with
knowledge. In other words, a well-fed mind is not dull rather it is
known for brilliance.
“
”
Reading is important, because if
you can read, you can learn
anything about everything and
everything about anything.
TOMIE DEPAOLA
Reading exposes you to the world beyond your immediate environment.
It simply means you can know a lot more than you know now when you
engage in reading.
Reasons why you don’t read.
1. You believe it is hard work.
2. You think it is boring.
3. You could also be on the lazy side, mentally.
4. You think it is only a school activity.
5. You think it is an expensive venture.
6. You tell yourself you don’t have the time.
7. It is not a passion for you.
8. You don’t see the necessity.
Reasons why you should read.
 You are building your mind because you think more when you read.
 Reading improves your vocabulary.
 It polishes your writing skills.
 There is a 99.9% chance that you do not have Alzheimer's disease when you are old.
 It improves your ability to concentrate.
 It is a great form of entertainment.
 It improves your memory. You have to always remember what you have read and then your
ability to remember things is sharpened.
 Develops your ability to analyze situations.
 Improves your relationships.
CATEGORIES OF BOOKS
 Fiction: These are stories that are not real and are not based on real
life events. The authors just made them up from their imaginations.
They could be romance novels, thrillers, fantasy, adventures, horror
etc.
 Non-fiction: They are real life events based on real stories. Examples
are auto-biographies and biographies. Autobiography is the history of
a person’s life written by himself while the biography is the history
of a person written by another person.
 There are other forms of non-fictions that include: Motivational
books, religious books, business books, journals etc.
HOW DO YOU KNOW THE KIND OF BOOK
FOR YOU?
 Ask yourself what you are genuinely interested in. You need
to read books that correlate with what you have interest in.
If you are a sports person, there are interesting fictions
centred around sports. If you love ‘love’, then you have
many at your disposal. If you love adventures and fantasies,
the likes of ‘Harry Potter’ will be your natural pick.
FOR THOSE WHO LOVE ‘LOVE’
FRANCINE RIVERS, KAREN KINGBURY…
IF YOU LOVE ADVENTURE…
Rick Riordan
Tips you need to know when shopping for books
 Know what you want
 Do your research. Ask booklovers, go online, research extensively, read about
authors and check what people recommend for certain subject areas.
 Read reviews on the books
 Don’t judge a book by its cover. Be open minded
 Read book blurbs and buy what incites your interest more.
How can reading
help you achieve
your dreams?
 You gain more insights from those
who might have walked the path you
are about to take.
 You get to understand how life
works through the lens of other
experienced people.
 Reading helps you discover yourself
more because it has a way of
exposing you to your own self.
 You may even discover that you are
not dreaming big enough when you
expose your mind to knowledge.
How do I cultivate the habit of reading?
Follow through with the 3D’s
 Determination: You need to make up your mind to do it.
 Diligence: Reading is built on consistency and diligence.
 Discipline: “With self-discipline, most anything is
possible.”-Theodore Roosevelt. You need to discipline
yourself to get more at home with reading.
