This document discusses different types of claims and how to defend policy claims. Policy claims propose specific actions to address issues or concerns. Examples given are proposing a student dress code and recalling an order allowing children aged 10-14 outside. To defend a policy claim, one must convince the audience a problem exists, make the proposal clear, establish need for change, and consider opposing arguments. The major part of the essay should provide how the proposal answers opposing arguments and benefits readers. Supporting the proposal with solid data and moral/common sense reasons can also be persuasive. A quiz is then provided to classify statements as different types of claims.
