This document provides information on a 5-day dangerous goods awareness training course for aviation personnel. The course aims to provide knowledge of the IATA dangerous goods regulations and teach skills for classifying, packaging, marking, documenting and handling dangerous goods safely. Introduction :
Handling of Dangerous Goods in the Aviation Industry
Dangerous goods are articles or substances, which are capable of posing a risk to health, safety, property or the
environment when transported by air, and which are classified according to Section 3 of the IATA Dangerous
Goods Regulations.
These characteristics will make their transport by air hazardous, unless suitable precautions are taken. The
commodities include the goods that are not only obvious substances such as acids, radioactive materials, poisons
and explosives, but also some unlikely items such as magnets, wheelchairs with batteries, bleaches, breathing
apparatus, some pesticides, etc.
Safety is paramount in the aviation industry: These regulations include legal requirements, operational restrictions,
packaging instructions, marking, labeling, and documentation to ensure the safe transportation of these goods.
Gain the competencies to accept, handle and process shipments containing dangerous goods according to the
current edition of the IATA Dangerous Goods Regulations (DGR) manual.
Content :
 Dangerous Goods courses aim at providing flight deck and cabin crew personnel with:
 A clear definition of Dangerous Goods.
 Knowledge of the Provisions for dangerous goods carried by passengers or crew.
 Knowledge of hidden dangerous goods.
 The ability to extract information from the list of dangerous goods.
 The ability to recognise and identify hazard and handling labels.
 Knowledge of incompatible dangerous goods.
 The ability to recognise package use and specification markings.
 A familiarisation with marking and labelling requirements.
 An understanding of the need for packaging inspection.
 Knowledge and understanding of emergency response procedures.
 NOTOC (Notification to Captain / Notification to officer commanding)

 Category 4 for Staff of freight forwarders involved in processing cargo, mail or stores (other
than Dangerous Goods)
 Category 5 for Staff of freight forwarders involved in the handling, storage and loading of
cargo, mail or stores
 Category 7 for Operator’s & ground handling agents staff accepting cargo, mail or stores
(other than Dangerous Goods)
 Category 8 for Operator’s & ground handling agents staff responsible for the handling,
storage and loading of cargo, mail or stores and baggage
 Category 9 for Passenger handling staff
 Category 10 for Flight Crew Members and Load Planners
 Category 12 for Security staff who deal with the screening of passengers and their baggage
and cargo, mail or stores
Learning Objectives :
The person who completes this awareness workshop is able to understand and apply the philosophies
underpinning the carriage of dangerous goods by air and identity and apply limitations associated with the
carriage of dangerous goods. They will also be able to classify dangerous goods and compile and verity relevant
documentation in line with organisational and legislative requirements.
The DG Initial Course covers and emphasizes safety in the transport of Dangerous Goods by air.
 To explain Shippers’ & Airline Operators’ responsibilities
 To locate and extract information from IATA’s DGR Manual
 To apply the regulations to loading, storage, segregation, inspection & emergency procedures
 To identify Dangerous Goods that are
(a) Forbidden for air transport
(b) Permitted as cargo under the DG Regulations
(c) Excepted from the DG Regulations
 Identify State & Operator variations
Target Group :
The workshop is aimed at those with responsibilities for, or duties in relation to, dangerous goods in the workplace.
All Operators, including:
 Staff accepting dangerous goods;
 Staff accepting cargo, mail or stores (other than dangerous goods);

About the Trainer :
DIETER MOLL is a highly resourceful, flexible, innovative, and enthusiastic safety and
security professional specializing in Critical Infrastructure safety and protection, Emergency
Response , Disaster Planning , Incident Command , Maritime Security, Counter Insurgency
Occupational Health , Safety and Quality including Quality Management System
Compliance . He is a certified PFSO and has extensive experience in dealing with Port and
Maritime security issues.
He has over thirty five years of applied safety and security experience, knowledge and
practical application of Industrial Safety and Security systems gained through formal studies and experience in
the South African Para-Military Police and Commercial and Industrial Safety and Security as well as the Oil and
Gas Industry environment in South Africa ,South West Africa and in the Gulf / Middle East Regions .
As a 10 year veteran of the SA Police Para-Military Services he advanced through a series of promotions , culminating in
oversight of a 34-member operational team. He served as a Section Commander responsible for daily routine patrolling
and investigation , crime prevention and various other policing functions.
Much of his law enforcement career was in Unit 9 , a counter terrorism and internal riot control task force based
in Durban South Africa.
18 months of his police career was spent on the SA borders as team leader for Counter Insurgency and anti-terror
operations working with Koevoet and COIN ( South African Police Counter Insurgency ) units.
He is experienced in promoting a safe and secure environment for staff and customers and is able to deliver
training effectively to students who are responsible for the planning and investigation of incidents and
emergencies. He has extensive knowledge of relevant safety and security equipment, policies, procedures, and
strategies to deal with a wide variety of emergency situations.
He holds a Nebosh IGC National Certificate and is well versed in Occupational Health , Safety and Environment.
He is a IRCA certified Lead Auditor for OHSAS 18001:2007 and RABQSA Lead Auditor for ISO 28000:2007.
He has extensive experience in Incident investigation and holds a Tripod Beta Incident Analysis Practitioner
certificate.
Currently contracted as a free-lance industry trainer for various training institutes in the Gulf / Middle East Regions
.
The main client being serviced is the Abu Dhabi Police Department.
