CLASS RULES
Decide what needs to be done to complete
your task.
Everyone should do the same amount of
work.
Do not disturb other group and avoid
unnecessary noise.
Stay on task, whatever is asked just answer
it.

RATIONAL EXPRESSION
A rational expression is a
fractional expression in
which both the numerator
and denominator are
polynomials.

Simplifying Rational
Expressions
To simplify rational expressions, we factor both
numerator and denominator and use following
property of fractions:
This allows us to cancel common factors
from the numerator and denominator.

AC A
BC B
Simplifying a rational expression is similar in reducing
fractions to lowest term.
To simplify:
a. Factor the numerator and denominator
completely.
b. Divide out (or cancel) any common
factors.
c. Rewrite the remaining factors in the
numerator and denominator.
Rational equations can be used to
solve a variety of problems that
involve rates, time and work.
( Distance to be run, time taken
to run the distance, number of
heart beats we take every
minute etc.)
A rational expression is in simplest
form when the numerator and
denominator have no common
factors (other than 1)
