A REPORT ON WATER AND SANITATION IN BWAISE FROM
A RESEARCH
THAT TOOK PLACE ON 29TH-SEPT-2015
PREPARED BY: LUBADDE RAHIM.
REG No.: 15/U/21289
STUDENTS No.:21502160
INTRODUCTION:
• Bwaise is located in Kawempe division with in kampala Uganda
capital.
• Due to lack of proper urban planning, it has turned into a commercial,
industrial, and residential township with poor infrastructure.
• Bwaise is a slum, one of the poorest areas in the city of Kampala.
• The fast population growth has resulted into encroachment on the
wetland
• The construction of unplanned buildings and poor drainage systems.
This has made Bwaise prone to flooding.
Location.
THE OBJECTIVES OF THE RESEARCH
• To find out the location of Bwaise town
• To find out different ways in which people dispose their human
wastes.
• To discover various drainage systems .
• To find out the nature of houses possessed by people.
• To find out the water sources.
• To discover the house hold hygiene practices.
• To find out the problems faced by people.
• To establish solutions to the problems people face.
METHODS USED WHILE COLLECTING THE
DATA:
• Interviewing
• Observation
• Recording
• Measuring
• Sampling
THE INFORMATION ACCORDING
TO THE VARIOUS RESEARCH
POINT OF VIEW
WATER SOURCES
• Taps, streams, wells, ponds, tanks
• Most of these are in poor conditions.
• For example domestic waste collect in the streams where people get
their water from.
• This is very dangerous to people’s life.
• This subjects people to diseases like cholera and other water borne
diseases.
• People who afford taps complain that water is off most of the time.
WATER SOURCES
• They end up collecting water from a nearby well contaminated by a
sewage pipe lines that pass close it.
• A threat to their lives.
• Newly and improved water dispensaries have been installed in
BWAISE by funding organization
• To see that people can access clean water in the area,
• However the system is expensive to some groups of people.
WATER SOURCES..
• Since most of the Bwaise inhabitants are poor people.
• The project was started by the coca cola Africa foundation
organization
• Middle class people in Bwaise have also installed water tanks
• To fight the problem of poor water in the area.
• These water tanks help people to access clean water.
• People collect water from the biggest stream in the town locally
known as ‘OMWALA GWE BWAISE.
• Nevertheless, a few of Bwaise inhabitants get water from ponds.
WATER SOURCES
Water Dispensary
People Collecting Water from a Pond
HUMAN WASTE DISPOSAL
• In toilets, use of polythen bags, some dispose it in drainage systems.
• People have constructed semi permanent toilets
• These toilets are in poor condition.
• Such toilets spread a bad odor and many people fail to attend to
them because they do not have privacy.
• Some people connect their sewage pipes to drainage
• There exists public toilets in some areas and these are used by
majority of the population
HUMAN WASTE DISPOSAL
• Some people connect their sewage pipes to drainage
• they open them majorly whenever it rains in order to dispose off the excess of
the sewage.
• this is not health to the people where the sewage descends.
• There exists public toilets in some areas
• these are used by majority of the population,
• it has helped to reduce the risk of poor disposal of human wastes.
• Some families that don’t have toilets of their own also use such toilets
• in Bwaise parish 2, many of the residents there have improved pit latrines
• Such toilets are exhibiting a high degree of health and supports human health.
• Subsequently some people use polythen.
HUMAN WASTE DISPOSAL
• Nevertheless, others use basins during the day in their houses
• then go on to dispose their human wastes in the drainage channels
• The local authorities also provide a sewage vehicle that collects
human wastes in Bwaise town.
• It is so unfortunate that the people of Bwaise do not generally have
septic tanks.
• There should be a clear system of human waste disposal in order to
improve the health lives of the people in Bwaise town.
DRAINAGE
• Most of the drainage systems used in Bwaise town are publically owned systems..
• These include; streams, wetland, ditch, pipes, and, culverts
• Drainage systems in Bwaise are in a poor condition and in this,
• they all need to be rehabilitated for their proper functioning.
• Open drainage channels exist in the area.
• They also cause the whole area to smell because most people connect small
sewage pipes
• Drainage channels carry both grey water. and also the black water from toilets
that are constructed close to them.
• A very broad stream was constructed to transport storm water.
• This stream is locally known as OMWALA GWE BWAISE
• Stagnant water is also a general feature in almost all the drainage channels..
DRAINAGE:
DRAINAGE
• During the rainy season,
• most of the drainage channels flood,
• There are no planned drainage channels.
• Indeed water is death in this area’,
• Private individuals also construct small drainage channels close to their
residences
• In some parts like Kivulu, there are well constructed culverts and drainage.
• People construct their houses just close to drainage channels
• Generally, BWAISE is built in a wet land
People construct their houses adjacent to
drainage channels
HOUSING;
• People have constructed their houses depending on their income levels in
the area.
• Permanent houses semi-permanent, and temporary.
• Much of the houses in bwaise are semi-permanent houses
• these are mainly made from mud and wattle plus very old iron sheets.
• These house are too much congested where by one is built after the other.
• The permanent houses made of cement, sand and bricks;
• such houses are mainly constructed by the middle class people in Bwaise
• There this also temporary houses in Bwaise town constructed using wood
and timber, these houses are mainly grass thatched.
• The storied houses that are in bwaise are mainly for the investors .
HOUSING
• Small rooms are occupied by a minimum of 5 people.
• These people claim that they can’t afford their rent fee.
• Such situations exist in almost every part of Bwaise like Kivulu,
Nabukaru and Masitoowa.
• Most of the people stay in rentals and people claim that Bwaise has
the cheapest rentals in the city of Kampala
• Wheneverv it rains, people in Bwaise do not sleep,
• majorly because their houses lose sheets.
• Generally, the houses in Bwaise are in a poor condition.
Semi permanent house in bwaise;
HOUSE HOLD HYGIENE PRACTICES
• Basically, the people of Bwaise have got the poorest house hold hygiene in
Uganda.
• Their poor sanitation reflects what takes place inside their houses.
• There is too much congestion in houses.
• The people of Bwaise don’t have bathrooms, .
• The verandas from which they bath from become their kitchen during the day .
• Most of the houses are not cemented .
• They also do not possess racks from which they could be washing their utensils
from.
• They do not also have dumping sites for their domestic waste.
• The hygiene conditions in Bwaise differ from house to house.
The photo below presents a home toilet in a
poor condition
THE CHALLENGES THAT I FACED WHILE
COLLECTING DATA:
• Hostility of some respondents.
• Bad weather
• Inaccessibity of some areas.
• The faulty tools that I possessed.
• The presence of tall buildings.
THE FOLLOWING IS RECCOMMENDED TO BE DONE TO IMPROVE LIFE IN BWAISE:
• The government should provide free clean and safe water.
• The Local authorities should also cover the open drainage channels.
• There should be construction of more public toilets in the area at a fair price.
• Sensitization of the people about the dangers of improper hygiene.
• Encouraging people to construct good septic tanks for their human wastes..
• People should be encouraged to construct their houses at a distance from the drainage
channels.
• The government should also promote spacing of the houses to reduce congestion.
• Providing a stand by waste vehicle to clean up Bwaise town.
• Land lords should also construct improved toilets and bath rooms for their rentals.
• There should also be widening of almost all drainage channels in Bwaise.
• The local authorities should also make strict laws governing the waste disposal in Bwaise
CONCLUSSION:
Generally, the problems faced by Bwaise people can be compared to
any slummy area in Kampala and even beyond. For example in
Katanga, katwe, kalerwe, kabowa and Ndeeba. They are never
unlimited and increase with increase in population.
• To settle the hazardous situations in Bwaise and to reduce the
problems faced by the inhabitants the above recommendations
should be put in practice to have a well-organized Bwaise with a
health and livable environment
