The issue of water shortage is widespread across all regions of Nairobi. As a resident of Nairobi, I have also experienced the inconvenience of dry taps and grappled with illnesses associated with contaminated water. My experiences motivate me to explore solutions that potentially solve this problem for me and my community.

4. Introduction
60% of residents of Nairobi City do not have access to a reliable
source of clean water.
Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya, is facing a severe water shortage.
Population growth, climate change, and poor management of water
resources have further enhanced the water crisis in Nairobi.
These challenges are evident in slums and suburbs where piped
infrastructure is non-existent or non-operational.

of Nairobi. As a resident of Nairobi, I have also experienced
the inconvenience of dry taps and grappled with illnesses
associated with contaminated water. My experiences
motivate me to explore solutions that potentially solve this
problem for me and my community.
7. The Current Situation
● Nairobi's population has been rapidly
increasing, surpassing the available water
supply.
● Water rationing is a common practice, with
many areas experiencing extended periods
without access to water.
8. The Challanges
Poor Water Supply
Infrastructure
Infrastucture
Rapid population
growth in urban
areas
Urbanization
Climate Change
Climate
The rise of water
cartels
Crime
9. Poor Infrastructure
● Aging water supply infrastructure results in
leakages and water loss.
● Vandalism and illegal connections of water
supply pipes are also common in the suburbs.
● More storage capacity is needed to improve
efficient water management.
11. Climate Change
● Erratic rainfall patterns lead to unpredictable
water availability.
● Droughts and floods further disrupt the water
supply.
12. Crime
The severe water shortage has created the
perfect breeding ground for the infamous
Nairobi water cartels that have been
making billions from city dwellers by
selling water at inflated prices.
13. Effects of Water Shortage
● Health risks due to lack of clean water and
sanitation facilities.
● Limited access to water affects agriculture,
leading to food insecurity.
● Economic impact on industries and businesses
reliant on water.
15. 1. Infrastructure Repair
● Repair and modernize water supply infrastructure to
reduce leakages and losses.
● Establish a community toll-free hotline to report water
leakages and have a team that is available to fix such
leakages when they occur
16. 2. Public sensitization
● Encourage the installation of water storage tanks
in homes and public buildings.
● Promote the use of rainwater harvesting systems
at individual and community levels.
19. 3. Water storage and
…Sanitation Loans
By providing loans, we can empower people to buy storage tanks,
install rain harvesting infrastructure such as gutter, and install taps and
toilets.
21. Expected Outcomes
● Cleaner and healthier homesteads
● A reduction in cases attributed to contaminated
water
● Businesses can offer services and products
more efficiently
● A better quality of life for residents of Nairobi

Editor's Notes
The water crisis in Nairobi is a multifaceted problem with no single solution. This presentation whoever aims to present actionable solutions which can be adopted by members of my community to ease this crisis.
Climate change factors such as Insufficient rainfall and prolonged droughts exacerbate the scarcity.
According to Business Daily, a local Newspaper, the water demand in Nairobi is at 850,000 cubic meters per day while the supply is 525,000 cubic meters, leaving a deficit of 325,000 cubic meters per day.

According to a January 2018 investigation, 40 percent of water cartels in Nairobi do not own any borehole but divert the city pipes to fill their tankers and sell water at their own price.
Increased cases of diseases associated with contaminated water and poor sanitation have been reported. By the end of March 2023, the Ministry of Health confirmed at least 7,800 cholera cases and 122 deaths across the country. 1,196 of those patients were from Nairobi county.

People in need already pay high prices for water. It is 5x more expensive to buy water from a vendor compared to accessing from sources such as boreholes and city pipes. The truth is that many of these families can get a water or sanitation solution in their home for a fraction of their annual water costs.
Access to safe water is essential to all families around the world not just here in Kenya. By providing solutions for a reliable water supply, the community can live a happier healthier life.
