Louis XVI & Marie Antoinette-palace was attacked by   Parisians, was executed like a normal criminal Jacobins-wanted a centralized gov’t, Paris as a capital, & gov’t control of economy Maximilien Robespierre-ran committee of public safety, executed w/ guillotine on 7/27/1794 (the 9 th  of Thermidor) Democratic republic-national convention, committee of public safety Wars with Austria, Prussia, Holland, Spain & Great Britain .
Economic Value of paper currency decreased 50% due to the Revolution Price inflation Food shortages Peasant rebellions against the revolution
Social Groups All French people belonged to one of the three estates. Estate- A social system which determines a person’s legal rights and status. The First Estate- Only 1% of the population was included, the Catholic clergy formed the first estate. They were tax exempt.  The Second Estate- The nobility formed 2% of the population, they were tax exempt.They received high positions in the Church, government, and in the army. The Third Estate- 97% of the population made this the largest social group. Peasants, artisans, as well as members of the bourgeoisie, belonged to the Third Estate. They were forced to pay all the taxes.
Continued…….. Louis summoned the Estates-General after dealing with economic problems.  The Estates- General, which had not met since 1614, was made up of delegates representing each estate. Knowing that the first and second estate might team up, the third estate called for individual votes. As a result, they called themselves the National Assembly and met at a nearby tennis court. Here the members took an oath promising not to disband until they wrote a constitution known as the Tennis Court Oath.
The Reign Of Terror Republic Of Virtue- The Committee opened new schools and promoted the idea of universal elementary education.
