In August 1792, radical forces took over the French government and the Revolution entered its most violent stage, with around 200 people being killed each day. Louis XVI and Marie Antoinette were executed for treason. Maximilien Robespierre led the Committee of Public Safety and established a reign of terror, executing those who opposed him, before eventually being overthrown and executed himself in July 1794. The Revolution caused severe economic problems like inflation and food shortages.
