The French Revolution began in 1789 and overthrew the French monarchy and feudal system. The Third Estate, made up of peasants and bourgeoisie, rebelled against the First and Second Estates of clergy and nobles who did not pay taxes. They formed the National Assembly and swore the Tennis Court Oath to create a new constitution. In July 1789, an angry mob stormed the Bastille prison, seen as a symbol of royal oppression. The National Assembly abolished feudalism and established basic rights and liberties for citizens in the Declaration of the Rights of Man.
