Napoleon Bonaparte was born in 1769 in Corsica and rose to become the Emperor of France from 1804 to 1814. He came from a noble family and was sent to military school at a young age. His early military successes led to promotions and he became a general by age 24. As leader of France, Napoleon reformed the government and education system. He negotiated important treaties, including the Louisiana Purchase in 1803 which doubled the size of the United States. However, his invasion of Russia in 1812 proved disastrous and marked the decline of his empire.
