This document provides an overview of activities and apothecaries in the Kingdom of Naples from the fall of the Roman Empire through the Byzantine period. It discusses how Arab culture spread knowledge of medicine and pharmacology to Southern Italy. Tabernae (workshops) produced and packaged medicines, and specialized herbalists and pharmacists operated using tools like mortars and bottles. The document also notes the establishment of deacons and hospitals in the 5th century to care for the sick, as well as establishments like the Estaurite that provided charity. It describes the spread of leprosy and plagues in the 6th century that reduced the Italian and European populations.

R. Villano - Book history of pharmacy knight of naples - part 3Raimondo Villano
1) The bubonic plague arrived in Naples in 1347 from infected ships from the Black Sea, killing around 64,000 people. 2) Doctors and pharmacists often fled cities to avoid infection, leaving people to untrained caregivers. 3) Treatments included burning fires with resins and herbs to purify the air, using fragrant substances like vinegar and spices, and bloodletting. Religious figures had difficulty providing last rites due to fear of infection.

R. Villano “Uomo - Malattia - Cura: storia, analisi e profili evolutivi”.
