Production Evaluation
How did you attract/address your audience?
• The choice of genre I have picked is horror this is a mass market and
has had great success in the last 5 decades including ‘Friday 13th’,
‘Texas Chainsaw Massacre’, ‘Scream’ and ‘World War Z’. As with the
movies above my movie follows the conventions of horror and the
way in which they act. This is through gore, violence and other horror
based criteria you would expect to see in an 18 or R rated movie.
• The use of language and dialogue throughout my piece is limited
which creates a quiet yet horrifying atmosphere for the movie/film.
This also allows the audience to make guesses about the characters as
the dialogue is limited it means they story remains mysterious.
• The use of font is a simple yet bold one, it is white which can be a
binary opposition to represent hope compared to the stark black
background representing darkness and fear. Additionally, the font
reflects that of a recording camera which is the predominant view the
audience will have of the film.
• The representations of characters is a stereotypical one for the horror
genre. We have the character who is easily scared, the muscular one
and the courageous/foolhardy one. These characters are common in
horror movies worldwide, however, there is no ethnic diversity in my
film sequence which was due to a lack of casting options. This means I
have missed out on one convention of horror characters.
How did you attract/address your audience?
• The narrative structure of my piece follows a simple Stone’s Structure
which is a beginning, a middle and an end. This means that the story
develops smoothly and follows a chronological pattern. This also
allows the audience to keep up with the story and focus on the little
details and plot twists that develop the story.
• The use of sound is also key to making the film/movie what it is.
There is a lack of dialogue which means the suspense builds.
Additionally, the music grows in volume making a real soundscape of
music and heavy breathing and screaming from the characters.
How did you attract/address your audience?
• I chose to mainly target a male social group as they enjoy horror
movies more than females stereotypically. This is shown through the
sexualisation of female characters in these movies and the fact that
there is intense violence. Also all of my characters are male and they
are having a ‘Lad’s Holiday Camping Trip’ which they can relate to.
• My initial audience research was helpful as it confirmed what I had
already suspected to see from this type of audience. This therefore
enabled me to continue with the stereotypical conventions I wanted
to put across and show in my sequence.
How did you attract/address your audience?
• My sequence links to films with a similar target audience by having
the same themes. The story builds on suspense and allows for the
creature to remain unseen. This means the audience are fearful and
many key horror films play on this lack of knowledge of what is killing
people. ’Alien’ is a perfect example of the type of movie that I wanted
to mix and blend with a ‘slasher’ like setting.
• My audience feedback was positive to see as it enabled me to make
changes whilst I was in the editing stage. Additionally, I took into
account some of the changes about how the characters should go
missing and utilized this audience feedback for my final piece.
