The focus group for our trailer consisted of teenagers aged 17-18 years. Our target
audience for the film Infatuated would be males and females aged 16+. It was quite
surprising how well the interviewees managed to pinpoint the exact genre of the
trailer being psychological horror, a sub genre of horror, and displayed how well we
had chosen a plot that could portray this.
We had initially thought that the females might enjoy the horror as it is common place
for friends to watch these movies in the cinema with the motive of being scared. This
was proved by the reactions of the focus group who seemed to thoroughly enjoy the
tension created by the montage and choice of music. The soundtrack proved to be
essential in creating this atmosphere which I found quite surprising as I had expected
the plot to be the most important aspect.
The answers from the question regarding the plot line showed great understanding
from the audience about what occurred in the trailer and implies that we were
successful in creating a complex yet understandable story. This was relieving to hear
as our group were anxious about how well the filmโ€™s plot line could be understood
and followed from the perspective of someone viewing the trailer for the first time.
FOCUS GROUP
Unfortunately, we were unable to film the reactions of males at the time of recording.
However, after completing the interviews, we held several mini screenings of our
trailer to large groups of students including males within the 17-18 age range.
Across both males and females, many enjoyed the ending jump scare as it was quite
unexpected and โ€˜very creepyโ€™. Several noted praise on the glitch effect used which
was achieved using Premiere Pro. I was particularly happy to hear this as I felt as
though I had improved significantly throughout the whole process of editing and
learning this from a potential audience was encouraging.
Some of the audience thought that the use of locations especially in the basement
scene and the mise-en-scene was very effective in creating a horror landscape. They
enjoyed the use of props such as the newspapers and stalker images. These may seem
like a miniscule aspect of the trailer yet they add a sense of realism which many of the
males touched upon in their reactions.
The reactions from the trailer were overall very positive and it felt very exciting for our
group to see our work being enjoyed by our peers. One even stated that they would
watch the film in the cinema if it was real, showing just how effective the promotional
package was in encouraging consumers to be interested in the film.
In terms of points for improvement, the focus group revealed that it would have been
good to have the date of release for the film included. We also agreed with this as we
realised after completion that this would be very important information for the
consumers and we had missed it out. This would be something to add to a future
trailer in order to create an even more professional product.
In conclusion, the focus group interviews and reactions from further target audience
groups helped us to discover what we succeeded in and where there is room for
improvement. It is clear that our mise-en-scene, audio and editing skills were
showcased effectively in the trailer from the reviews of the audience and so our trailer
was very positive in these aspects. However, the feedback also showed that we should
try to improve some of our camerawork which was unsteady at times and focus more
on the general conventions of trailers such as the release date.

Question 3 - Focus Group

  • 1. The focus group for our trailer consisted of teenagers aged 17-18 years. Our target audience for the film Infatuated would be males and females aged 16+. It was quite surprising how well the interviewees managed to pinpoint the exact genre of the trailer being psychological horror, a sub genre of horror, and displayed how well we had chosen a plot that could portray this. We had initially thought that the females might enjoy the horror as it is common place for friends to watch these movies in the cinema with the motive of being scared. This was proved by the reactions of the focus group who seemed to thoroughly enjoy the tension created by the montage and choice of music. The soundtrack proved to be essential in creating this atmosphere which I found quite surprising as I had expected the plot to be the most important aspect. The answers from the question regarding the plot line showed great understanding from the audience about what occurred in the trailer and implies that we were successful in creating a complex yet understandable story. This was relieving to hear as our group were anxious about how well the filmโ€™s plot line could be understood and followed from the perspective of someone viewing the trailer for the first time.   • 2. Unfortunately, we were unable to film the reactions of males at the time of recording. However, after completing the interviews, we held several mini screenings of our trailer to large groups of students including males within the 17-18 age range. Across both males and females, many enjoyed the ending jump scare as it was quite unexpected and โ€˜very creepyโ€™. Several noted praise on the glitch effect used which was achieved using Premiere Pro. I was particularly happy to hear this as I felt as though I had improved significantly throughout the whole process of editing and learning this from a potential audience was encouraging. Some of the audience thought that the use of locations especially in the basement scene and the mise-en-scene was very effective in creating a horror landscape. They enjoyed the use of props such as the newspapers and stalker images. These may seem like a miniscule aspect of the trailer yet they add a sense of realism which many of the males touched upon in their reactions. The reactions from the trailer were overall very positive and it felt very exciting for our group to see our work being enjoyed by our peers. One even stated that they would watch the film in the cinema if it was real, showing just how effective the promotional package was in encouraging consumers to be interested in the film.
  • 3. In terms of points for improvement, the focus group revealed that it would have been good to have the date of release for the film included. We also agreed with this as we realised after completion that this would be very important information for the consumers and we had missed it out. This would be something to add to a future trailer in order to create an even more professional product. In conclusion, the focus group interviews and reactions from further target audience groups helped us to discover what we succeeded in and where there is room for improvement. It is clear that our mise-en-scene, audio and editing skills were showcased effectively in the trailer from the reviews of the audience and so our trailer was very positive in these aspects. However, the feedback also showed that we should try to improve some of our camerawork which was unsteady at times and focus more on the general conventions of trailers such as the release date.
