QUESTION 3: WHAT DID
YOU LEARN FROM THE
AUDIENCE FEEDBACK?
STAGE ONE: PITCHING OUR IDEAS
FOR MUSIC VIDEO
•

By showing our pitch to the class, our group got a range of feedback that helped us
with the progression of the music video. When presenting the pitch, we started with
explaining the synopsis of the video through 3 stages: beginning, middle and end.
In the beginning stage of the video, we decided to open the narrative with the
climax of the plot in order to make it more enigmatic to the viewer. The middle
stage of the video would therefore include flashbacks of what happened in order to
give the viewer information about the plot whilst the ending stage would represent
the denouement of the story. The detailed aspect of the pitch was appreciated, as it
offered a wider understanding of the plot. However, the fact that one of our peers
asked us some questions about the story warned us in regards of its representation,
as it might become confusing if we are not carefully planning the storyboard. We
also received positive feedback for the ending of the video, as our teacher felt that
not letting the audience know if the protagonist would stay with her boyfriend would
make it more enigmatic. She also felt that making the protagonist stay would be a
bad idea, as it could disappoint the audience and thus, affect the message of the
video.

•

Our peers did not feel any problems with the locations we were going to use (the
street, the room/house, the park). However, because our pitch did not include any
specific information about where the shooting will take place, we ultimately got told
to think about it more thoroughly.

•

Last but not least, one of our peers commented about the props we were going to
use, saying that getting one of our actors to break a mirror would bring Health and
Safety issues. This helped us greatly, as it made us to think more carefully about
what would be appropriate to use as props.

•

STAGE TWO: CD PACKAGING PITCH
•

We then presented our ideas we had for our packaging. The feedback we got for this session was very helpful, as it
contributed more than the previous pitch to our decision-making. For instance, when presenting our ideas, we
vocalised our concern regarding the location we could use for the photo shoot. We were unsure whether to use the
studio or not, and thus, asked our peers for their opinion. There were a lot of students who felt that using a location
outside the premises of the studio or ones we used in the music video would be a good idea (for instance, a wall of
graffiti). However, our teacher felt that using a location that would not be included in the music video would lack
consistency to our products, thus contributing negatively to our project. Because of this, we decided to use the studio as
we would feel that the locations used in the music video (the park, the house, the street) would not allow us to give the
urban effect we were looking for.

•

We also presented our desire to use light streaks for our music video, as we felt that our audience is more likely to react
to colours due to it being young. However, our peers were unsure if this would be a good idea. While some of them felt
that it would look good, a great amount of our peers thought that it might contribute negatively to our ancillary
products, especially if we were not going to shoot in a studio. They ultimately felt that light streaks would work well
only if we used the studio, mainly because light streaks seem to work better if the light can be manipulated
accordingly.

•

Another aspect that we showed in the pitch was the fonts that we were going to use. We therefore showed a selection of
the ones we were considering of using and asked which ones our peers would prefer. They ultimately settled for the
simplest one, as they felt something “classy” and “simple” would work best due to our artist’s representation. As our
artist is very urban and edgy, using a decorative font would juxtapose with her image and would ultimately alter her
persona.

•

We also showed three different layouts. As previously, we asked our peers which ones they would prefer. They
ultimately settled for the first one, as it represented our artist best. Although we preferred the second one, our peers
felt that it is too decorative and wouldn’t show the title of the album as boldly as the first one. The third one felt too
elegant, and was advised to discard the possibility of using it.

•

The fact that we did not use anything for the poster gave us a warning sign, as we were told to think about it more
thoroughly.

Question 3

  • 1. QUESTION 3: WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM THE AUDIENCE FEEDBACK?
  • 2. STAGE ONE: PITCHING OUR IDEAS FOR MUSIC VIDEO • By showing our pitch to the class, our group got a range of feedback that helped us with the progression of the music video. When presenting the pitch, we started with explaining the synopsis of the video through 3 stages: beginning, middle and end. In the beginning stage of the video, we decided to open the narrative with the climax of the plot in order to make it more enigmatic to the viewer. The middle stage of the video would therefore include flashbacks of what happened in order to give the viewer information about the plot whilst the ending stage would represent the denouement of the story. The detailed aspect of the pitch was appreciated, as it offered a wider understanding of the plot. However, the fact that one of our peers asked us some questions about the story warned us in regards of its representation, as it might become confusing if we are not carefully planning the storyboard. We also received positive feedback for the ending of the video, as our teacher felt that not letting the audience know if the protagonist would stay with her boyfriend would make it more enigmatic. She also felt that making the protagonist stay would be a bad idea, as it could disappoint the audience and thus, affect the message of the video. • Our peers did not feel any problems with the locations we were going to use (the street, the room/house, the park). However, because our pitch did not include any specific information about where the shooting will take place, we ultimately got told to think about it more thoroughly. • Last but not least, one of our peers commented about the props we were going to use, saying that getting one of our actors to break a mirror would bring Health and Safety issues. This helped us greatly, as it made us to think more carefully about what would be appropriate to use as props. •
  • 3. STAGE TWO: CD PACKAGING PITCH • We then presented our ideas we had for our packaging. The feedback we got for this session was very helpful, as it contributed more than the previous pitch to our decision-making. For instance, when presenting our ideas, we vocalised our concern regarding the location we could use for the photo shoot. We were unsure whether to use the studio or not, and thus, asked our peers for their opinion. There were a lot of students who felt that using a location outside the premises of the studio or ones we used in the music video would be a good idea (for instance, a wall of graffiti). However, our teacher felt that using a location that would not be included in the music video would lack consistency to our products, thus contributing negatively to our project. Because of this, we decided to use the studio as we would feel that the locations used in the music video (the park, the house, the street) would not allow us to give the urban effect we were looking for. • We also presented our desire to use light streaks for our music video, as we felt that our audience is more likely to react to colours due to it being young. However, our peers were unsure if this would be a good idea. While some of them felt that it would look good, a great amount of our peers thought that it might contribute negatively to our ancillary products, especially if we were not going to shoot in a studio. They ultimately felt that light streaks would work well only if we used the studio, mainly because light streaks seem to work better if the light can be manipulated accordingly. • Another aspect that we showed in the pitch was the fonts that we were going to use. We therefore showed a selection of the ones we were considering of using and asked which ones our peers would prefer. They ultimately settled for the simplest one, as they felt something “classy” and “simple” would work best due to our artist’s representation. As our artist is very urban and edgy, using a decorative font would juxtapose with her image and would ultimately alter her persona. • We also showed three different layouts. As previously, we asked our peers which ones they would prefer. They ultimately settled for the first one, as it represented our artist best. Although we preferred the second one, our peers felt that it is too decorative and wouldn’t show the title of the album as boldly as the first one. The third one felt too elegant, and was advised to discard the possibility of using it. • The fact that we did not use anything for the poster gave us a warning sign, as we were told to think about it more thoroughly.
