The white male detective is portrayed in a position of power but shown to lose control of the interrogation to the female suspect. The female suspect is portrayed negatively as evil, murderous, and unsympathetic. However, this challenges the typical representation of women as weak by having the female gain power over the male. While the piece reinforces the dominant ideology of male power, it challenges the ideas of females being weak by having the aggressive female suspect overwhelm the male detective.

The social groups that appear in our piece are white male and female,
young, and you could possibly make a case for them being mental
disabled.
The social groups left out are blacks,
the disabled, gay and lesbian.
However, sexuality is not important
in our piece.

3. How are they represented?
In our piece, the male detective is portrayed in a position of power. This conforms to the
dominant ideology that men hold all positions of power in society, therefore portraying the
patriarchy present in modern society. In our piece, however, the white male detective is
portrayed negatively, as he quickly seems to lose control of the interrogation and becomes
quickly frustrated with suspect.
The female is portrayed negatively in
our piece. This is because she is shown
to be evil, murderous and
unsympathetic towards her victims.
However, our piece challenges dominant
representations of women being weak
and vulnerable, as our antagonist
stands up to the powerful male and
makes him crumble.

4. How does our product reinforce or challenge
ideologies?
In the horror genre, men are typically portrayed negatively, as being psychopathic killers, where as females
have recently been portrayed as the unlikely heroes. In our piece, the female is the psychopathic killer and
there is no typical ‘final girl’. We dressed the female in clothes to specifically portray her as a femme fatale
type of character. The use of props with the cigarette also contributed to her femme fatale character. The
detective was dressed in a suit to show his authority.
There is the dominant ideology present that men hold positions
of power in society and that patriarchy is still present. However,
the female is aggressive towards the detective which is not
expected from a female character. We challenge the dominant
ideology in society that females are weak and vulnerable by
having the female murderer gain the upper hand on the male
detective. We also challenge the dominant ideology that women
are innocent and can do no wrong by having the female by a
psycho murderer.

always has a deadpan
look and her voice is
quite monotonous
which shows that she is
emotionless. This is
conventional of a
horror murderer.
She is wearing red and
black. This portrays her as
a femme fatale as red is a
provocative colour.
The fact that she is smoking shows
that she is dominant and she has
power. This is also conventional of
film noir.
The location is stock of horror,
however it is not conventional of a
police interrogation. This gives the
film a corrupt feel and gives the idea
of a criminal underworld.
The low key lighting in this film
gives the impression of a criminal
crime circle. It also contributes to
the atmosphere of the piece.
The over the shoulder shots
make us feel like we are part of
the conversation.
The footage was de-
saturated by about
80% which gave the
film a dull look. This
was done by using
image controls.
