CHRIS BROWN
Born on May 5, 1989, in Tappahannock, Virginia, Chris Brown became a
teen heartthrob, landing R&B and pop hits that included "Run It!," "Kiss
Kiss" and "Forever." In 2009, he physically assaulted his then-girlfriend,
pop/dance star Rihanna, and found his songs dropped from radio. Brown
has since returned to success on the music charts. His 2011 album
F.A.M.E. won a Grammy. Still Brown continued to find himself in trouble
with the law. In 2013, he was arrested for assaulting a man outside Brown
is known for his smooth voice, amazing dance moves, boy-next-door charm
and controversy surrounding his physical assault of former girlfriend
Rihanna. Growing up in a small town of roughly 2,000 people, Brown
enjoyed singing in his church choir and was inspired by such musical artists
as Sam Cooke, Stevie Wonder and Michael Jackson. He also showed off
his dance prowess by imitating the dance moves of another one of his
idols, Usher.a Washington, D.C.
Brown's self-titled album was released in November 2005 and quickly found
its way into the charts. Working with established producers and
songwriters, he had a No. 1 hit with "Run It!," which was co-written by Scott
Storch and Sean Garrett. The track also featured a guest appearance by
rapper Juelz Santana. More hits followed, including "Yo (Excuse Me Miss)"
and "Gimme That," which was written by Garrett and Storch. While many of
the songs have a hip-hop influence, Brown's voice has a classic R&B
sound. And just like many other teenagers, dating and girls figure
prominently in his songs. He has sometimes been compared to Michael
Jackson because of his dual talents as a singer and dancer.
USHER
Usher is a successful American R&B and pop musician, his hit albums
include My Way, Confessions and Looking 4 Myself. Born on October 14,
1978, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Usher entered the fame game at age 14,
two years after he moved with his mother and brother to Atlanta. After
performing on Star Search, Usher landed a recording contract with LaFace
Records. He released his first album in 1994, at age 15. For more than 15
years, Usher has dominated the airwaves, releasing such albums as
Confessions (2004), which sold more than 1 million copies in its first week.
In June 2012, he produced the album Looking 4 Myself, which found a No.
1 spot on Billboard's albums chart. Usher's songs have repeatedly landed
at No. 1 on the charts, earning him several Grammy and People's Choice
awards, among other honors.
DRAKE
Famed hip-hop artist Drake was born to a mixed-race couple in Canada in
1986, and raised Jewish. His hit songs include "Every Girl," "Best I Ever
Had," "Money to Blow" and "Take Care.“Without his steady source of
income, and not yet making significant money as a rapper, Drake was on
the verge of looking for a day job. "I was coming to terms with the fact that
... I might have to work at a restaurant or something just to keep things
going," he remembers. But early in 2008, Drake received an unexpected
call from rap star Lil Wayne, who asked Drake to board a flight to Houston
that night to join his tour.
Since that phone call, Drake has enjoyed a rapid ascent to the top of the
music world. After touring and recording with Lil Wayne, Drake released his
third mixtape, So Far Gone, in February 2009. It featured the infectiously
catchy single "Best I Ever Had," which peaked at No. 2 on Billboard's Hot
100 singles chart. Since then, Drake's barrage of catchy, R&B-infused hip-
hop songs have dominated radio airwaves. His most popular singles at this
time included "Every Girl," "Forever" and "Money to Blow."
By mid-2009, Drake had inked a record deal with Lil Wayne's Young Money
Entertainment.
THE WEEKND
The Weeknd, originally Abel Tesfaye, broke into the music scene with the
2011 mixtape House of Balloons. He went on to work with Drake, Wiz
Khalifa and others, while building his own career as an artist. In 2015, the
Weeknd enjoyed huge success with the album Beauty Behind the
Madness, which featured the hit single “Can’t Feel My Face.” The
Weeknd’s earlier mixtapes were re-released as 2012’s Trilogy, which
became a platinum-selling record for the young artist. Despite his growing
popularity, he managed to hide himself from the public at large. The
Weeknd refused interviews for a long time and chose to use images of
women for his 2013 album, Kiss Land, rather than pictures of himself.
Some of the mystique he built around himself was intentional, but it also
reflected the shyness and insecurities that troubled him early in his career.
