In what ways does your media
product, use develop or challenge
forms and conventions of real media
products ?
By Aneeka Ishaq
Conventions of comedy films
• Bright places like towns and cities, more
populated areas.
• Mainly a school for teen comedy.
• A lot of natural camera work and medium shots
to show their facial expression.
• Funny dialogue.
• High key lighting.
• Socially awkward characters, quite idiotic.
• Has subgenre e.g. Romance
• Exaggerated acting.
Our film
We challenged the conventions
here a bit. As we were making a
teen comedy and the main parts
of the thirteen year old boy were
in the house, and we put the older
man in the school to his work life
and the little boys home life.
When some people may say it
shout be the other way round.
Most comedy film have
a subgenre like
romance. We tried to do
social realism with
teenagers and the messy
room highlights this.
Our film
As it is a short film we
included the credits as
part of the film and
found a creative way to
do this by the character
writing them.
We did not follow the convention
of the film title fitting in with film
and telling us something about the
film as we put in the middle of
some of the scenes we had a plain
title.
Our bright location on the road.
Our film
In our film we also did not
have a lot of funny
dialogue it was comedic
actions that would make
the audience laugh.
Medium shots and close ups to
show their facial expressions.
As a teen comedy we
stuck to a school but
changed the characters
that would have more
scenes in the school.
Our film
Idiotic characters where he
kicks the ball wrong. We
only had one idiotic
characters.
We also had amore
serious teenage
characters which
breaks the
conventions as all the
main characters
would idiotic.
Our film
We added speech bubbles as our film was
short we thought that it would add to the
comedic genre.
Towards the end we put a
twist on it as the character
goes all paincky and the
audience do not what
happens. As it was a short
film we chose to have an
open ended narrative where
as most comedies would
have a closed ended
narrative.
