Evaluation 1
Researching recent products at the start of the project made
me realise the typical forms and conventions of real media
products out today. ’22 jumpstreet’ is a typical comedy film,
which I chose to briefly analyse. However, as a group we did
analyse several films which were wither comedy or drama
including ‘hot fuzz’, ‘Zombie land’. Analysing these trailers both
physically and mentally we found that the typical conventions
were:
 Naturalistic Shots – Presents characters as equal
 Camera follows characters a lot
 Close-ups to exaggerate expressions
 Fast paced shots
 Sound is very important
 Diegetic dialogue is very useful and is therefore very well
pronounced
 Non-diegetic sound is also very important – used to place
emphasis at certain points
 Lighting is commonly bright/natural lighting – realistic
environment
 Props are also very important – very important for slapstick
media
 Contrasts in characters are also very common – Normal
contrasted to idiotic
 Above average intelligent characters are also used for
contrasts
 Location – tends to fit target audiences – crude – strip club
Another key area of a comedy is the type of comedy’s there are. There are lots of
different types of comedies, when split into three main groups they are known as;
• Slapstick
• Dark Humour
• Wordplay
Each of these groups splits into several smaller groups. Out of
the films we analysed a lot of them either followed the route of
Slapstick or Dark Humour. Dark Humour on its own follows the
ideas of ideas which are usually not joked about such as
terrorism, racism, rape, drugs etc. Slapstick is a rather classic
example of comedy using lots of physical movements and
gestures. Both of these have been incorporated into our main
task.
- In our main task (introduction) we use many of these conventions. The
soundtrack/sound effects we used at the beginning was a song which is very
popular in current teen culture ‘Low Life’, we used this at the start of the clip.
This is used to create an atmosphere which justifies the party scene. The song
then changes later on to the song ‘L$D’, this creates a completely different
atmosphere. We did this to change the tempo to the introduction. It uses the
contrasts of the two genre ideas we are using Slapstick and Dark Humour
(drugs).
- There are a mixed variety of shots which are used
commonly within the comedy genre. Our film
introduction follows a lot of the typical aspects. We have
several close-ups to create certain atmospheres and to
help the audience understand one of the characters
perspective.
The main way we used Dark Humour was in a way to help create drama within the piece, we
used drugs in order to arise a serious issue. The rest of this issue is then told throughout our
main storyline for the rest of the film.
Similarly to a lot of comedy we used a lot of visual editing including effects to enhance the
audiences view of what is happening. However this doesn’t conform to the typical conventions
within the drama genre. The drama typically involves a lot of slow paced, held shots. This
creates the dramatic atmosphere it needs. It does have some editing of course however it isn’t
quite as much as that of a comedy film.
We challenge the form of characters within the comedy genre.
Typically you will get either a highly intelligent yet socially
awkward character or a low intelligence character with a lack of
common sense. However within our film we do not have these
characters. We do this due to our piece being a comedy drama
and not a comedy, by making less exaggerated characters we
can help create the serious atmosphere we wanted to create
within our piece.
Conclusion-
As an all our piece follows a lot of the typical conventions however at the same time doesn’t
follow other aspects. However we did this for specific reasons in order to create the most
visually attractive and enticing introduction.
