1. Question 1
How did you USE, DEVELOP or
CHALLENGE codes and conventions
of real media products?
2. Codes and conventions for genre
Soap operas are programmes that follow the daily lives of a group of people who live in
the same area. The codes and conventions for soap operas are
• Run continuously
• Run on the same channel
• Generally Last 30 minutes (23m if adverts)
• Follow the lives of residents who live in a certain area
3. Codes and conventions for sub genre
Scripted reality programmes feature characters who are always very well dressed
and well groomed. Typical storylines of scripted reality shows include relationships
breaking up and people falling out with each other. Scripted reality shows tend to use
artificial light so that the stars look bright and optimistic for positive storylines e.g.
getting a dream job and darker lighting for negative storylines e.g. breakups

4. Both people in shot who are in the scene
We used an over shoulder shot so that we can see things from the point of view from the character
that is being spoken to
Using- An over shoulder shot showing both characters that are in the scene
Development- My head isn’t at the edge of the frame so some of the background can be seen
Challenge- It doesn’t look like I am directly looking at Cason whereas in the TOWIE screenshot
Joey is clearly looking at Chloe
5. Shot reverse shot
We decided to use a shot reverse shot because it looks professional
Using- A shot reverse shot of both people in the scene
Development- The rest of the other person can be seen in our trailer whereas in TOWIE only an
arm or head can be seen
Challenge- Both shots were filmed from different distances
6. A shot featuring both of the stars during an argument
Our trailer features two people arguing so we decided to use a shot similar to the one on the left
from TOWIE
Using- The shot features both of the stars in a similar pose to the TOWIE stars with each person
taking up around 50% of the screen
Development- Rather than being stood up we were sat down whilst we were filming our scene
Challenge- We are not directly facing each other we instead sat at an angle rather than stand face
to face
7. Use of focus
We decided to use a shot where objects in the distance were out of focus because it looks
professional
Using- Sophie's feet are in focus whereas the white Volvo in the background is blurry
Development- Sophie is moving whereas the man in TOWIE is still and the car in the background is
moving
Challenge- The shot in TOWIE is the top half of the stars body whereas our shot is Sophie’s legs
and feet
8. Big close up
We decided to use a big close up because it is an important shot that shows emotion
using- The tops of Graces and Kate’s heads are cut off slightly by the camera
Development- Two people are in a big close up rather than just one
Challenge- The whole scene was done with a big close up rather than just a few seconds of film as
it normally is
9. • Both feature two people who have posed specifically for the magazine
• Stars anchored to the relevant TV show
• All stars looking at the camera
• Both feature simple ‘classy’ colour schemes
• Both make it apparent what the main story is
10. I saw this billboard for Made In Chelsea and liked the classy but moody look that it has. For
my billboard I recreated the moody look and incorporated a storyline from my programme on
my billboard poster as well as including information such as the channel and start date of the
programme
• Hugo looks moody because he is wealthy and bored
• Sophie and Cason look moody because they have relationship problems
• Both posters contain big pictures that are visible from a distance
• Both posters are very striking
• My poster features information on the programme such as the name, channel and start date
• The stars on both posters are dressed appropriately for the genre of their TV show
