Casing
• What is casing?
• Pipe that is API certified for its specific application
• Why is casing set?
• Zonal Isolation when cemented in place
• Casing point selection
• Regulations
• Area Geology
• Formation Pressures
• As the operator, who decides on casing points?
2
Casing
• API casing is available in standard sizes from 4-1/2” to 20” OD
• Usually steel but can be aluminum, fiberglass, stainless steel,
plastic, titanium etc.
• One piece of casing pipe is referred to as a “joint” of casing
• Casing length is dependent on the “range” of pipe
• Range-1: 18-22ft
• Range-2: 27-30ft
• Range-3: 38-45ft
• Casing Threads are defined by the coupling type
• API Threads
• LTC: Long thread coupling
• STC: Short thread coupling
• BTC: Buttress thread coupling
• Semi & Premium Threads
• See VAM Presentation

Casing
• Running Casing
• Bales/Elevators
• Power Tongs
• Torque Turn
• Calculate weight and Hookload HL
• Calculate collapse, how often should you fill the pipe?
• Is the pipe taking the proper amount of fluid to fill? CSGcap
• Is the proper amount of fluid coming back to the pits as the
casing is run in the hole? CSGcap & CSGdisp
• Once casing is landed, circulated mud. Calculate B/U
5
Casing
• Centralization
• Vertical Wells
• Never truly vertical, usually spiral
• Typically use bow spring type centralizers
• There are state regulations on centralizer placement
• The shoe is very important to be centralized
• Horizontal Wells
• Balance between too many and not enough centralizers
• Many types: rigid, floating, bow spring, bladed, spiral bladed, etc.
• Centralizer design software can model the well as drilled and suggest
centralizer placement
• High dogleg areas need more frequent centralizers to obtain
sufficient standoff
6
Casing
• Stand-off
• Pipe Stand-off is a major contributor to hole cleaning, mud
removal, and cement quality.
• % 𝑆𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑜𝑓𝑓 = ൗ𝑊𝑛 𝑅2−𝑅1 ∗ 100%
7
Casing
• Stand-off
• The Stand-off formula results a percentage, where 0% represents
the pipe in contact with the wellbore wall. 100% represents the
pipe is perfectly centered in the well.
• When the pipe is not centered, the wider portions will promote
flow due to less resistance. There can be pockets of cuttings or
mud in the tighter areas causing

Case Study: Mat 3 – Mat 4
Mat Specifications
• Mat 3: SIZE 7’6” X 6’ 10”
• Mat 4: SIZE 6’9” X 6’ 11”
• Interlocked polypropylene grid
Application data
• Case study based upon both mats in deepwater semisubmersible rig
applications, with exposure to most extreme drilling conditions (recorded)
• Mat 3 is on driller’s side of rotary table; Mat 4 is on opposite side of rotary
table
• A 30” bit with a 12” motor has been placed on mats, equaling approximately
25,000 pounds of total weight with minimal impact observed (minor mashing
of polypropylene material) and no structural damage to mat grid
• 8 ½” collars 4 stands, 5 ½” HT-55 hevi-weight 7 stands, approximately 180
stands HT-55 drill pipe.
o Total weight of collars, hevi-weight and drill pipe (Mat 3) =
350,000 pounds (mat 4 holding the remainder) Tubular weight
total = over 500,000 lbs
• Both mats in operational use 5 ½ months, with approximately 150 trips made.
Only minor adjustments needed during subsequent rig shut-down
• Client testimony indicates a time savings on cleaning and re-doping from 15
minutes up to 1 hour for deeper trips. Over the 5 ½ month period, this equates
to approximately 2-3 days of rig time saved.

10. User Feedback:
Since installing the racking mats on Nabors 623, we have seen a noticeable
decrease in the number of reface repairs on our pin end connections. Also
have been recovering an average of 30 bbls of OBM per trip out of the hole on
our deeper jobs in Jefferson and Hardin Co. The rig floor stays cleaner and
less of a slip hazard with all the OBM from the ID of the drill pipe being
contained and transferred back to the active system.
Prior to installing the racking mats we had an average reface repair rate of
33% (221 pins – 72 reface repairs) on our 4” XT-39 DP.
Our recent numbers are 11.5 % (190 pins – 22 reface repairs) and 15% (78
pins – 12 reface repairs) on XT-39 and 2-7/8” WT-23.
