This presentation discusses Pareto Diagram for bunking lectures.Pareto Diagram is based on Pareto’s Law which states that in almost every case, 80% of the total problems incurred are caused by 20% of the problem cause type, therefore by concentrating on the major problems first, you can eliminate the majority of your problems.
2. • Pareto diagram is also known as Pareto chart, Pareto analysis & it was named after Vilfredo
Pareto
• The Pareto diagram is a graphical overview of the process problems, in ranking order of the most
frequent, down to the least frequent, in descending order from left to right
• In this way the chart visually depicts which situations are more significant
• Pareto Diagram is based on Pareto’s Law which states that in almost every case, 80% of the total
problems incurred are caused by 20% of the problem cause type, therefore by concentrating on
the major problems first, you can eliminate the majority of your problems
• Juran changed the phrase describing the Pareto principle to "the vital few and the useful many“
• One of the example of Pareto chart is described here
– Document related customer complaints is broken down into six categories
– If all complaints causes equal distress
to customer working on quality
certificates would have most impact

3. • In Pareto analysis first step is finding all the reasons that are causing the given problem, like in this
case of bunking lectures there are various reasons for students to bunk lectures
• Data is collected from 120 students regarding reasons for Bunking Lectures
• Basically stratification is the sorting of data according to certain variables or criteria
• Stratification can provide an indication of which characteristics are associated with the phenomenon
that you are trying to explain. By stratifying data, a problem-solving team can identify the key
problem categories to focus their efforts

• The bold line indicating at what point you've reached 80% cumulative percentage—everything
to the left of that line are your 20% vital few problems to focus on, while the remainder on the

5. As stated in Pareto Law there are some vital symptoms that accounts for 80% of problems so we
can eliminate most of the problems only by focussing on these few vital symptoms. In our case vital
symptoms are-
– Late Wakeup : One of the major reason behind the bunking classes is late wakeup of
students. It is the habit that causes every 4th
student to get bunk his lectures. There are
many reasons behind late wakeup of students like lack of time of sleep due to late night
parties, late night studies, lots of assignment etc.
– Lack of strictness regarding attendance : Most of students bunk their classes because
there is no strict rules in colleges/schools regarding attendance so student takes it lightly
as they don’t have to face any consequences because of bunking lectures if there would
be strict rules for attending classes then definitely bunking of classes will be reduced
– Dislike towards the subject : Subjects in which students don’t have any interest they
don’t prefer to attend classes of that subject. The solution for this problem might be
teaching the subject in more creative and effective way so that study become more
interesting and student don’t find the subject boring
– Fun: At teenage most of the students are not serious about study. They are bit careless
about the classes & they always wants to have fun so they go out with friends and roam
around. One more reason for bunking the classes is that they do not get time for having
fun because of lots of assignment & other works. The solution for this problem can be
teacher should make the classes fun & interesting so that students can have fun
simultaneous with study
6. • In a problem we need to find what are all the factors that are causing it by finding the causes
behind the problem we can define it and focus on the major causes to reduce or eliminate
the problem
• In this case the problem is “Bunking Lectures by the student” so we found out the different
causes behind it like
– Lack of strict rules regarding attendance,
– Going out with friends,
– Dislike towards the subject,
– Peer pressure,
– Late wakeup etc.
• After finding these causes we need to prioritize these causes on which we should to get
maximum benefit by putting minimum effort
• Then we need to study the selected causes that are majorly affecting the problem and then
find out how to remove these causes
• For example we can take the cause “Late wakeup” which is affecting about 25% students so
what are the reasons behind late wakeup like lack of time of sleep due to late night parties,
late night studies, lots of assignment etc. so how can we eliminate these causes by teaching
them proper time management so that they can schedule everything according to
requirement and follow it
7. • First & foremost important lesson learned is what is Pareto diagram, how to draw it & lot of
important information about it
• This method is an extremely useful way to identify the most critical aspects on which to
concentrate
• In Six sigma advanced Pareto charts are particularly useful in the analyze phase
• It can also be used to aid project selection and to prioritize in the Measure Phase
• It vastly improve outcomes with relatively little effort because we have to focus on few
causes to solve majority of problems so it helps in saving lot of time
• It also helps a team communicate the rationale for focusing on certain areas
• It is very easy to understand and apply
• It can be applied to any type of problem whether it is business related problems or personal
problems or any type of problem
