3. The Changing Constellation
● You can not see all the constellations in one night.
● Some constellations can only be seen during certain seasons.
● An observer at the equator can view all the constellations during
the year.
● An observer at the North or South pole can see only the stars in a
single hemisphere of constellations.
● The stars appear to change positions in the sky throughout the
year as the earth revolves around the sun.
4. Circumpolar Constellations
● Constellations that never set below the horizon when
seen from a particular location on Earth.
● The term circumpolar refers to constellations and stars
that are circling the north and south celestial poles
without ever dipping below the horizon. They are found
near the celestial poles.
5. The 3 Circumpolar Constellations:
can be seen at Northern
mid-latitudes.
North circumpolar
constellation
01
can be seen at the
Southern mid-latitudes.
South circumpolar
constellations
02
can lie on either side of the celestial
equator which is the projection of the
Earth’s equator to the sky.

6. North circumpolar constellation
● Ursa Major is the largest of all northern constellations.
● Ursa Minor contains the slightly fainter and is smaller than the
Ursa Major.
● Cassiopeia is easily recognized for its prominent W shape.
● Draco is the eighth largest constellation in the sky.
● Cepheus is found between Cassiopeia, Draco and Ursa Minor.
7. South circumpolar constellations
A. Crux is the
easiest of the three
to identify as it
contains the
Southern Cross.
B. Centaurus is
the ninth largest
of all
constellations.
C. Carina used to
be part of the much
larger Greek
constellation Argo
Navis.
9. ● Every three months, the earth travels about one-fourth
its orbit.
● A different constellation also appears every month.
● The word zodiac means ‘circle of animals’ in greek hence
all of the zodiac constellations are named after an
animal.
● There are 12 zodiac constellations.
● The zodiac signs were based on the constellations 2000
years ago.
