Who would be the audience for your media product?
For our opening we wanted it to be rated a 15; this is because we want the product to be scary,
but not too scary so that only over 18’s can watch it- because 15-17 year olds make up a lot of
viewing figures for films. We wanted the film to be realistic but supernatural at the same time so
that the film is open to variety of different viewers; so a ‘realistic supernatural horror thriller’ may
be a mouthful to say, but it would appeal to wide range of viewers. These viewers could be; those
25-50 year olds who love a supernatural scary element, or 15-20 year olds who want to go out
with their friends to see a film- the film would appeal to all.
The main age range we would attract would be anyone within 15-50, because the film has not
been designed for particular people- it would invite anyone to go and see it. If the age range is so
wide then the film would be widespread throughout society with everyone talking about it; so the
success of the film would be great. Not only would we want to attract all these ages, but we
would also aim to attract both genders to come and watch our films. The film will have main
characters of both genders, so the audience will be able to connect with the characters, no matter
what gender they are. We would hope that anyone from around the world of any ethnicity would
watch our film, as it is entertaining for anyone of any culture; it targets a white British girl within
the opening, but as the film goes on we would perhaps use a male character from another part of
the world of a different ethnic origin to show we have involved different ethnicities; to promote
the film to a wider, less niche audience.
Where did we get the idea for our target audience?
We got this idea from the infamous ‘Paranormal Activity’ series of films; as they rated the film 15,
and made nearly $200 million from a budget of $15,000. The film was a worldwide success as it
appealed to so many different viewers- as soon as I was 15 I watched it and I hate supernatural
films but for some reason I wanted to watch it, maybe from the influence of others- which is what
we would hope our film would be able to do; invite even those viewers that hate the sound of it
because everybody else has been drawn into viewing it.
