Giant buckwheat is a large, rounded shrub native to San Clemente and Catalina Islands. It has attractive gray-green foliage and blooms from May to August with tiny pink-cream flowers held above the foliage. The flowering heads resemble baroque lace. It is drought tolerant once established and requires full sun and well-drained soil. Giant buckwheat makes a good tall hedge or specimen plant and provides habitat and food for bees, butterflies, birds and small animals.
