San Clemente Island Bush Mallow is an endangered shrub native to San Clemente Island, California. It grows as a spreading woody perennial up to 8 feet tall and wide in rocky canyon walls, coastal sage scrub, and grasslands below 750 feet. The evergreen shrub has many ascending branches with hairy, lobed leaves and expands vegetatively through underground runners. Its showy pink-white to purple-white flowers bloom from March to May and attract hummingbirds, bees and butterflies. The bush mallow requires full sun or part shade, tolerates most soil textures, needs little water once established, and benefits from occasional pruning to stimulate new growth.
