3. One of the best known and most
useful mathematical principles is
the Pythagorean Theorem, credited
to the Greek mathematician and
philosopher Pythagoras.
The theorem relates the length of
the sides of a right triangle. The
side c which is opposite the right
angle is the longest side, known as
hypotenuse. The other two sides, a
and b are called the legs of the right
triangle.
4. Pythagorean Theorem states
that “In a right triangle, the
square of the length of the
hypotenuse is equal to the sum
of the squares of the lengths of
the legs”.

9. If the foot of a
10-meter ladder
is placed 6
meters from a
building, how
high up the
building will the
ladder reach?
10. A 10 ft. bamboo ladder is placed
against the wall with its base 3 ft.
from the wall. Find the vertical
distance of the top of the bamboo
ladder to the ground.
11. The length of a rectangle is
20 inches and the width is
12 inches. How long is the
diagonal of the rectangle?
12. 1. The bottom of a ladder must be
placed 3 feet from a wall. The
ladder is 12 feet long. How far
above the ground does the ladder
touch the wall?
13. 2. A soccer field is a rectangle 90
meters wide and 120 meters long.
The coach asks players to run from
one corner to the corner diagonally
across the field. How far do the
players run?

the house do you need to
place a 15’ ladder so that it
exactly reaches the top of a
12’ wall?
