10. IMMUNITY
DEFINITION
Resistance acquired by a host towards
injury caused by microorganisms and their
products.
·
Protection against the infectious diseases
is only one of the consequences of the
immune response, which entirely is
concerned with the reaction of the body
against any foreign antigen.
11.
12.
13.
14.
15. Innate immunity:
Resistance to infection which an individual possesses by virtue of his
genetic and constitutional makeup
Not affected by prior contact with microorganisms or immunization
a. Non specific :
Indicate a degree of resistance to
infections in general
b. Specific:
Resistance to a particular pathogen
16. INNATE IMMUNITY
First line of defense
• Intact skin
Mucous membranes and
their secretions
• Normal microbiota
Second line of defense
Phagocytes, such as
neutrophils, eosinophils,
dendritic cells, and
macrophages
Inflammation
. Fever
• Antimicrobial substances

19. ■ PROPERTIES OF WHITE BLOOD
CELLS
1. Diapedesis
Diapedesis is the process by which the
leukocytes squeeze through the narrow
blood vessels.
2. Ameboid Movement
Neutrophils, monocytes and
lymphocytes show amebic movement,
characterized by protrusion of the
cytoplasm and change in the shape.
3. Chemotaxis
Chemotaxis is the attraction of WBCs
towards the injured tissues by the
chemical substances released at the site
of injury.
20.
21. ADAPTIVE IMMUNITY
• This is inducible and develops slowly than the innate
response.
• This is specific kind of immunity and has memory,
therefore providing long term protection.
This occurs with contact of foreign particle
Adaptive immunity is often sub-divided into two major
types depending on how the immunity was
introduced.
I.Naturally acquired immunity occurs through contact
with a disease causing agent, when the contact was
not deliberate
II. Artificially acquired immunity develops only
through deliberate actions such as vaccination
22. Acquired Immunity
Immunity that develops during your lifetime
Active Immunity
Develops in response to an
infection or vaccination
Passive Immunity
Develops after you receive antibodies
from someone or
somewhere else
Natural
Antibodies developed in
response to an infection
Artificial
Antibodies developed in
response to
a vaccination
Natural
Antibodies received from
mother, e.g., through breast
milk
Artificial
Antibodies received
from a medicine, e.g.,
from a gamma globulin injection or infusion
HID
23. Function

your body.
• Destroying invaders.
• Limiting how much harm the invaders
can do if they’re inside your body.
• Healing damage to your body.
• Adapting to new challenges and
threats.
• Allergies.
• Autoimmune diseases LIKE
Lupus and rheumatoid
arthritis.
• Primary immunodeficiency
diseases.
