As we have seen, expressions change according to
the punctuation marks we use, but what are
punctuation marks? They are simply graphic marks or
signs that are neither letters nor numbers, which
help to make sense of a written text, they help to
make it read and interpreted correctly.

According the Oxford Dictionary, punctuation
marks are a sign or mark used in writing to divide
sentences and phrases. There’s two types:

What are the punctuation marks?
The punctuation marks are: comma,
period, ellipsis, quotation marks,
question and exclamation marks,
parentheses, semicolon, semicolon,
dash, colon, and brackets. Let's get
to know them!
Punctuation marks will help
us to make the reading and
interpretation of a text
more comprehensive,
coherent and orderly.
Comma
The comma is used to give further
explanation in a sentence:
Juan, the blacksmith, closed his store early.
It is also used to list different elements in a
sentence:
Matias' mom bought snacks, soda, and
napkins for the school picnic.

Semicolon
It is also used to enumerate,
but only in sentences that are
more complex and already
involve commas: My old dog;
with big, hairy paws; his eyes,
with poor vision.
It is used to give meaning to
sentences that are
independent but related to
each other: We traveled by
boat; on an amazing evening.

? Question marks mark the end of a question: How are
you doing today?
Interrogation and exclamation marks
Exclamation marks express an emotion or an
expression: How beautiful! How sad!
!
Quotation marks
The main function of quotation
marks in a text is to mark when
quotations are used:
The presenter said: "Good evening
America".
Also to highlight a word or phrase
within a sentence:
"Private" life does not exist right
now.
“ ”
One that indicates the
end of a sentence
within a paragraph of
text, but the
continuation of the
sentence in the text.
In this case there are different types of periods:
Period
Another one that
indicates the end of a
concept in a given
paragraph and the
beginning of a new one
where a new idea
is expressed.
End period is the point
that expresses the end
of the text
.
Suspension points
… They can also be used to generate doubt or
mystery: We will have to wait... the judge has the
last word. And to complete sentences: You can
imagine what I think...
The suspension points have the same function as
the word etcetera: I went to the store and bought
bananas, pears, apples…

We use a colon to introduce a list, a
quotation or speech or to introduce an
explanation of the preceding clause.
Please bring the following items: a pen,
paper, and a calculator.

Parentheses appear in a text when it is
necessary to make a certain clarification or to
share relevant additional information:
The teacher worked for many years at the
school (2003-2023); I met the saleswoman (the
woman who helped me choose my graduation
dress) at the subway station.

Brackets are used when a textual quotation is very
long and a certain part of it is omitted.
"Neuroscience allows the brain to develop in a
