2. HAVE YOU EVER THOUGHT THAT IF YOU WERE
ALIVE DURING THE TIME OF JESUS, WHAT
WOULD BE YOUR RESPONSE?
WOULD YOU BE A
PETER,
JUDAS,
MAKING MONEY IN THE TEMPLE,
PHARISEE???
3. CROWDS
Singing Hosanna and welcoming Jesus as the King
who comes in the name of the Lord. (Matt 21: 1-11)
The same crowd turned around a week later and
shouted “crucify him”.
What is our response to Jesus- like the crowds does
it waver depending on what we feel?
AM I PART OF THE CROWD?
PALM SUNDAY
4. When Jesus arrived at the Temple, he found the courts
full of corrupt money changers. He began overturning
their tables and clearing the Temple, saying, "The
Scriptures declare, 'My Temple will be a house of
prayer,' but you have turned it into a den of thieves".
(Matt 21:12-14)
Today we are the temple of God – what will He see in
amthe temple – a hypocritical heart? Or a heart of
praise?
AM I ONE OF THE CORRUPT SELLERS?
5. Consider our lives…Is it like the fig tree looking fruitful
from the outside, but bear no fruit?
AM I A FIG TREE?
Jesus curses a fig tree –
The tree was green and
full of leaves and
looked like it would
have fruit- But Jesus
didn’t find any.
6. The day Judas Iscariot negotiated with the Sanhedrin,
the rabbinical court of ancient Israel, to betray Jesus
(Matthew 26:14-16).
Olivet Discourse - an elaborate prophecy about the
destruction of Jerusalem and the end of the age.
7. The Bible doesn't say what the Lord did on the
Wednesday of Passion Week. Scholars speculate that
after two exhausting days in Jerusalem, Jesus and his
disciples spent this day resting in Bethany in
anticipation of Passover.
8. Holy Week takes a somber turn on Thursday.
From Bethany, Jesus sent Peter and John ahead to the
Upper Room in Jerusalem to make the preparations for
the Passover Feast.
He instituted the Holy Communion with the Last
Supper.(Matt 26:17-30).
9. That evening after sunset, Jesus washed the feet of his
disciples as they prepared to share in the Passover.
By performing this humble act of service, Jesus
demonstrated by example how believers should love
one another-
Worldly Leadership lessons might talk of power and
one upmanship, but Jesus teaches us by example
that the greatest leader serves his people.
10. Meanwhile, in the early morning hours, as Jesus' trial
was getting underway, Peter denied knowing his
Master three times before the rooster crowed. What
was his response when he realized? (Mark 14:66-72)
What is our response to the realization of sin in our
life? Do we like Peter weep bitterly and repent?
AM I A PETER?
11. According to Scripture, Judas Iscariot, the disciple who
had betrayed Jesus, was overcome with remorse and
hanged himself early Friday morning.
COMPARE Peter’s response and Judas’ response.
When we sin, are we filled with remorse like Judas but
don’t repent or go to Jesus for forgiveness?
AM I A JUDAS?
12. Meanwhile, before the third hour (9 am), Jesus
endured the shame of false accusations,
condemnation, mockery, beatings, and abandonment.
After multiple unlawful trials, he was sentenced to
death by crucifixion, one of the most horrible and
disgraceful methods of capital punishment known
at the time.
Before Christ was led away, soldiers spit on him,
tormented and mocked him, and pierced him
with a crown of thorns.
Then Jesus carried his own cross to Calvary where,
again, he was mocked and insulted as Roman
soldiers nailed him to the wooden cross.
13. Jesus never once retaliated, justified himself, got angry,
cursed or abused anyone....but like a lamb taken to
slaughter...he meekly suffered.
Would we have been part of the crowd mocking
Jesus?
How do we respond when somebody corrects us?
Criticizes us?
What was Jesus response? Do we have Christlike
responses?
14. Read Matthew 27:19 – Pilate’s wife spoke about Jesus
being innocent. But to Pilate did not do the right thing
– How many times our actions and decisions are based
not on doing the right thing even when we know it is
right?
Do we see a Pilate in ourselves?
James 4:17 – If anyone, then, knows the good they
ought to do and doesn’t do it, it is sin for them
AM I A PILATE?
15. Read Matthew 27:54
Why did the Centurion respond like that? Did it have to
do with how Jesus responded?
AM I A CENTURION?
16. Jesus' body lay in its tomb, where it was guarded by Roman
soldiers throughout the day on Saturday, which was
the Sabbath.
When the Sabbath ended at 6 pm, Christ's body was
ceremonially treated for burial with spices purchased by
Nicodemus:
Nicodemus, like Joseph of Arimathea, was a member of
the Sanhedrin, the court that had condemned Jesus Christ
to death.
For a time, both men had lived as secret followers of Jesus,
afraid to make a public profession of faith because of their
prominent positions in the Jewish community.
17. Similarly, both were deeply affected by Christ's death. They
boldly came out of hiding, risking their reputations and
their lives because they had come to realize that Jesus was,
indeed, the long-awaited Messiah. Together they cared for
Jesus' body and prepared it for burial.
Will we like them stand up for our faith when the time
comes, even at the risk of losing friends, being ridiculed?
18. We reach the culmination of Holy Week.
The resurrection of Jesus Christ is the most important
event of the Christian faith. The very foundation of
all Christian doctrine hinges on the truth of this
account.
Early Sunday morning, several women (Mary
Magdalene, Joanna, Salome, and Mary the mother of
James) went to the tomb and discovered that the large
stone covering the entrance had been rolled away.
19. Read John 20:16 – Mary recognized Jesus when He
called her by name…will you?
AM I LIKE MARY? Responding to the Shepherd’s
call.
20. Take a minute to introspect.....WHO AM I?
What do we need to pray about as we see ourselves in
some of these characters?
Luke 22:31 – Simon, Simon (put your name
instead of Simon) Satan has asked to sift all of
you as wheat. But I have prayed for you,
Simon, (your name), that your faith may not
fail. And when you have turned back,
strengthen your brothers.
