HAL (Hindustan Antibiotics Limited)
 First drug manufacturing company to be set up in the
public sector by Government of India with active co-
operation of WHO and UNICEF.
 HAL is the first drug manufacturing unit in India to
undertake commercial production of antibiotics like
Penicillin, Streptomycin, Gentamicin, Ampicillin &
Amoxycillin etc.
 HAL has also diversified into agro-vet products.
 Throughout India has set-up three subsidiary com-
panies, promoted in collaboration with the respective
state government,
 Karnataka Antibiotics and Pharmaceuticals Limited
(KAPL), Bangalore
 Maharashtra Antibiotics and Pharmaceutical Limited
(MAPL)
 Nagpur and Manipur State Drugs and Pharmaceuticals
Limited (MSDPL), Imphal
 Discovered 2 new molecules i.e., HAMYCIN a potent
antifungal antibiotics, and AUREOFUNGIN, a plant
antifungal antibiotic.
IDPL (Indian Drugs & Pharmaceuticals Limited)
 IDPL is the largest Central Pharma Public Sector
Undertaking in India with plants at Rishikesh,
Gurgaon & Hyderabad and two Subsidiary Units at
Chennai and Muzaffarpur.
 IDPL was incorporated in April, 1961 with main
objectives of creating self-sufficiency in respect of
essential life saving medicines,
 To free the country from dependence on imports
 To provide medicines to the millions at affordable prices
and not to make millions from the medicines.
 Established as a part of Healthcare Infrastructure
 IDPL played a major role in the strategic National
Health Programmes
 Family Welfare Programme & Population Control (Mala-
D & Mala-N) anti-malarials (Chloroquine)
 prevention of dehydration (ORS) by providing quality
medicines.
 In the time of 1994, when India is badly affected with
Plaque, it plays an anchor role of supplying
tetracycline for the entire nation
 In 2005 to combat national emergency (leptospirosis)
arising due to flood in Maharastra, IDPL had supplied
required Doxycycline Caps.
RDPL (Rajasthan Drugs & Pharmaceuticals Limited)
 Rajasthan Drugs and Pharmaceuticals ltd. (RDPL) was
incorporated on 02.11.1978 with the objective to supply
life saving and other essential drugs. Company has
started his commercial production in Aril 1981.
 Company has its Manufacturing Unit & registered
office in VKI Area, Jaipur(Rajasthan).
 Company is schedule Compliant having
manufacturing facility of Tablets, Capsules, Liquid
Orals, ORS Powder & Opthalmic medicines in a
Schedule ‘M’ compliant facility.
KAPL (Karnataka Antibiotics & Pharmaceuticals Limited)
 The Company was incorporated on 13th March, 1981
and the commercial production started from August,
1984.
 The manufacturing units and the registered office of
the company is located at Bangalore (Karnataka).
 The main products are Pharmaceuticals formulations
like tablets, capsules, injectables, etc.
 KAPL has grown from strength to strength in the areas
of manufacturing and marketing of various life saving
and essential drugs.
BCPL (Bengal Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals Limited)
 Bengal Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals Works Ltd. was
established on April 12, 1901, by eminent scientist &
entrepreneur A.P.C. Ray which is the first Chemical &
Pharmaceutical Company in India.
 From humble beginning with
 one factory at Maniktala (Kolkata) in 1905
 three more factories were established
 one at Panihati in 1920
 one in Mumbai in 1938
 one in Kanpur in 1949 with its Registered Office at 6, Ganesh
Chunder Avenue, Kolkata.
 The Company performed very well till early 50s but
started making losses from mid 1950’s. On December
15, 1977, the Management of Bengal Chemical was
taken over by the Government of India and the Union
Government nationalized the Organization on
December 15, 1980.
 The company manufactures and markets a wide range
of industrial chemicals, drugs and Pharmaceuticals
besides cosmetics and home products.
 In the home products, the well known products
include Cantharidine Hair Oil and Lamp Brand
Phenol.

Public sector undertakings of pharma in India

They are  HAL (Hindustan Antibiotics Limited)  Maharashtra Antibiotics and Pharmaceutical Limited (MAPL)  Karnataka Antibiotics and Pharmaceutical Limited (KAPL)  Manipur State Drugs and Pharmaceutical Limited (MSDPL)  Hindustan MAX-GB, Pimpri, Pune (HM-GB)  IDPL (Indian Drugs & Pharmaceuticals Limited)  RDPL (Rajasthan Drugs & Pharmaceuticals Limited)  KAPL (Karnataka Antibiotics & Pharmaceuticals Limited)  BCPL (Bengal Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals Limited)
  • 6.  First drug manufacturing company to be set up in the public sector by Government of India with active co- operation of WHO and UNICEF.  HAL is the first drug manufacturing unit in India to undertake commercial production of antibiotics like Penicillin, Streptomycin, Gentamicin, Ampicillin & Amoxycillin etc.  HAL has also diversified into agro-vet products.
  • 7.  Throughout India has set-up three subsidiary com- panies, promoted in collaboration with the respective state government,  Karnataka Antibiotics and Pharmaceuticals Limited (KAPL), Bangalore  Maharashtra Antibiotics and Pharmaceutical Limited (MAPL)  Nagpur and Manipur State Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Limited (MSDPL), Imphal  Discovered 2 new molecules i.e., HAMYCIN a potent antifungal antibiotics, and AUREOFUNGIN, a plant antifungal antibiotic.
  • 8. IDPL (Indian Drugs & Pharmaceuticals Limited)
  • 9.  IDPL is the largest Central Pharma Public Sector Undertaking in India with plants at Rishikesh, Gurgaon & Hyderabad and two Subsidiary Units at Chennai and Muzaffarpur.  IDPL was incorporated in April, 1961 with main objectives of creating self-sufficiency in respect of essential life saving medicines,  To free the country from dependence on imports  To provide medicines to the millions at affordable prices and not to make millions from the medicines.
  • 10.  Established as a part of Healthcare Infrastructure  IDPL played a major role in the strategic National Health Programmes  Family Welfare Programme & Population Control (Mala- D & Mala-N) anti-malarials (Chloroquine)  prevention of dehydration (ORS) by providing quality medicines.  In the time of 1994, when India is badly affected with Plaque, it plays an anchor role of supplying tetracycline for the entire nation  In 2005 to combat national emergency (leptospirosis) arising due to flood in Maharastra, IDPL had supplied required Doxycycline Caps.
  • 11. RDPL (Rajasthan Drugs & Pharmaceuticals Limited)
  • 12.  Rajasthan Drugs and Pharmaceuticals ltd. (RDPL) was incorporated on 02.11.1978 with the objective to supply life saving and other essential drugs. Company has started his commercial production in Aril 1981.  Company has its Manufacturing Unit & registered office in VKI Area, Jaipur(Rajasthan).  Company is schedule Compliant having manufacturing facility of Tablets, Capsules, Liquid Orals, ORS Powder & Opthalmic medicines in a Schedule ‘M’ compliant facility.
  • 13. KAPL (Karnataka Antibiotics & Pharmaceuticals Limited)
  • 14.  The Company was incorporated on 13th March, 1981 and the commercial production started from August, 1984.  The manufacturing units and the registered office of the company is located at Bangalore (Karnataka).  The main products are Pharmaceuticals formulations like tablets, capsules, injectables, etc.  KAPL has grown from strength to strength in the areas of manufacturing and marketing of various life saving and essential drugs.
  • 15. BCPL (Bengal Chemicals and Pharmaceuticals Limited)
  • 16.  Bengal Chemicals & Pharmaceuticals Works Ltd. was established on April 12, 1901, by eminent scientist & entrepreneur A.P.C. Ray which is the first Chemical & Pharmaceutical Company in India.  From humble beginning with  one factory at Maniktala (Kolkata) in 1905  three more factories were established  one at Panihati in 1920  one in Mumbai in 1938  one in Kanpur in 1949 with its Registered Office at 6, Ganesh Chunder Avenue, Kolkata.
  • 17.  The Company performed very well till early 50s but started making losses from mid 1950’s. On December 15, 1977, the Management of Bengal Chemical was taken over by the Government of India and the Union Government nationalized the Organization on December 15, 1980.  The company manufactures and markets a wide range of industrial chemicals, drugs and Pharmaceuticals besides cosmetics and home products.  In the home products, the well known products include Cantharidine Hair Oil and Lamp Brand Phenol.
