• Sun Pharmaceuticals was established by
Mr. Dilip Shanghvi in 1983 in Vapi, Gujarat,
with five products to treat psychiatry ailments.
Cardiology products were introduced in 1987
followed by gastroenterology products in
1989. Today, it is the largest chronic
prescription company in India and a market
leader in psychiatry, neurology,
cardiology, orthopedics, ophthalmology,
gastroenterology and nephrology.
• Dr. Reddy's Laboratories is an Indian
multinational pharmaceutical company
located in Hyderabad, Telangana, India. The
company was founded by Anji Reddy, who
previously worked in the mentor
institute Indian Drugs and Pharmaceuticals
Limited.[2] Dr. Reddy's manufactures and
markets a wide range of pharmaceuticals in
India and overseas. The company has over 190
medications, 60 active pharmaceutical
ingredients (APIs) for drug manufacture,
diagnostic kits, critical care,
and biotechnology products.
• Divi's Laboratories was established in 1990 as
Divi's Research Centre. The company initially
started developing commercial processes for the
manufacturing of APIs and intermediates. Divi's
Research Centre changed its name to Divi's
Laboratories Limited in 1994 to signal its intent to
enter the API and intermediates manufacturing
industry.[12] Following this, the company
established its first Manufacturing facility in 1995
at Choutuppal, Telangana.[13] In 2002, the
company's second manufacturing facility
commenced operations at Chippada
near Visakhapatnam.[13]

'The Chemical, Industrial
& Pharmaceutical Laboratories' in 1935 in
Mumbai.[10][11] The name of the Company was
changed to 'Cipla Limited' on 20 July 1984.[11] In
the year 1985, US FDA approved the company's

founder's son Yusuf Hamied, a Cambridge-
educated chemist, the company provided generic
AIDS and other drugs to treat poor people in the

launched Deferiprone, the world's first oral iron

of the Torrent Group. Based in the Indian city
of Ahmedabad. It was promoted by U. N. Mehta,
initially as Trinity Laboratories Ltd, and was later

• Torrent Pharmaceuticals operates in more than 40

Torrent Pharma is active in the therapeutic areas of
Cardiovascular (CV), central nervous system (CNS),
gastro-intestinal, diabetology, anti-infective and pain

pediatric segments. Drug firm Torrent Pharmaceuticals
on 23 July 2019 reported a 32.51 percent rise in its
consolidated net profit to Rs 216 crore for the quarter
ended 30 June, mainly on account of robust sales in

• Lupin was founded in 1968 by Desh Bandhu
Gupta,[11] who was a professor of chemistry
at BITS-Pilani, Rajasthan. Gupta moved to
Mumbai in the 60s to work on his business
enterprise for which initially he had initially
borrowed Rs 5000 from his wife to fund his
venture. Subsequent funding from Central Bank
of India, the company was able to start their
manufacturing facility for producing folic acid and
iron tablets for Government of India mother and
child health program. Later Lupin started
manufacturing anti TB drugs which at one point
formed 36% of the company sales and was
considered as the largest TB drugs manufacturer
in the world.[12]
• Cadila was founded in 1952 by Ramanbhai Patel (1925–
2001), formerly a lecturer in the L.M. College of
Pharmacy, and his business partner Indravadan Modi. It
evolved over the next four decades into an established
pharmaceutical company.
• In 1995 the Patel and Modi families split; the Modi
family's share was moved into a new company
called Cadila Pharmaceuticals Ltd., and Cadila
Healthcare Ltd became the Patel family's holding
company. Cadila Healthcare had its initial public

(1857–1921), an 1885 graduate of
the University of Michigan, founded
the Abbott Alkaloidal Company in
Ravenswood, Chicago. At the time, he was a
practicing physician and owned a drug store.
His innovation was the use of the active part
of a medicinal plant, generally
an alkaloid (e.g., morphine, quinine, strychnin
e and codeine), which he formed into tiny
"dosimetric granules". This approach was
successful since it produced more consistent
and effective dosages for patients.[5] In 1922,
the company moved from Ravenswood to
North Chicago, Illinois.
• Alkem set up its research and development
facility for ANDA development at Taloja in 2003.
In 2006 anti-infective drug Taxim of Alkem
became the first anti-infective drug in the Indian
pharmaceutical industry to cross 1,000 million in
terms of domestic sales in India. In 2014 Clavam
other drug from Alkem crossed 2,000 million
mark in terms of domestic sales in India. In 2007
the company filed its first ANDA for
drug Amlodipine which was approved in 2009.
Alkem has developed a portfolio of 705 branded
generic drugs, with 13 of the brands featured
among the top 300 brands in India for the fiscal
year 2015 and a portfolio of 705 brands in India
in the six months ended 30 September 2015.
Alkem have 21 manufacturing facilities, 19 in
India and 2 in US. 5 of the facilities are US FDA,
TGA, UK MHRA approved.
