A psycho-educational assessment evaluates a child's intellectual, social-emotional, and academic development by administering tests and observations. It can be accessed through a school district, which provides assessments for free but with long wait times, or through a registered psychologist for a fee of $1,500-3,200. To obtain a private assessment, one should get a referral from a family doctor, find a psychologist, book a consultation, complete the two-part assessment, and submit receipts and doctors notes for potential reimbursement.

Where do I access a Psycho-
Educational Assessment?
4. • Normally the costs of the assessment are covered by
the School District. Due to limited resources, the
process for acquiring an assessment may be lengthy.
It is important to ask how long of a wait it will be
before your child has access to a Psycho-Educational
Assessment.
• If you would like to avoid the lengthy wait time, you
could also access a Psycho-Educational Assessment
from a Registered Psychologist.

5. • Registered Psychologists offer a Psycho-Educational
Assessment more quickly than the schools are able to
provide.
• The fee for a Registered Psychologist’s assessment
ranges from $1,500-3,200 depending on the
complexity and length of the assessment.
• The recommended process for acquiring these
private services is as followed:

6. • Get a referral note from your family doctor.
• If you do not have a family doctor the Relocation
section of the Family Navigator website offers
information about how to find one. To access this
information click on this link

and select your base.
Step 1
7. • Find a Registered Psychologist
• The provincial College of Psychologists will offer a list
of psychologists in your area.
• It is also recommended that you ask and/or make sure
that the Registered Psychologist that you select
meets the School District’s standards. The School
District may also be able to recommend a Registered
Psychologist that they have worked with in the past.
Step 2
8. • Once you have selected a Registered Psychologist,
you will need to book a consult appointment.
• A psychologist will use this first session to explore
concerns and relevant history with the child and/or
his/her parents.
• Once the consult appointment is completed the next
step is to book the assessment itself.
Step 3
9. • Due the length of the assessment process, the
assessment will usually take place over two
appointments.
• The psychologist will use standardized measurement
tools to assess the child’s strengths and weaknesses
in areas such as reading, math, spelling, written
expression, listening comprehension, oral expression,
and work habits.
Step 4
10. Once the assessment has been completed, you will
want to submit the following items to Public Service
Health Care Plan:
• Receipt for the private psychological services
• Doctor’s note
Please note that as of October 2014 Public Service
Health Care Plan benefit will increase to $2000 per year.
