PSY 636: Final Project Guidelines and Grading Guide
Overview
The final project for this course is an intervention plan with
recommendations for the treatment of a child/adolescent who
has been affected by the legal system
and now is showing signs of a mental and/or behavioral
disorder. The final product requires students to fully define and
operationalize a treatment intervention
plan.
The finished product will incorporate the application of theories
and concepts taught in the course to substantiate the following
criteria:
1. An examination of the factors that would specifically affect
treatment in the case (familial, environmental, etc.)
2. A substantiated evaluation of various treatment options
outlining their appropriateness
3. A recommendation of one or more intervention strategies
with justification as to why they selected the one(s) that they
did
4. An evaluation of potential ethical issues that should be
considered or guarded against and how their plan does so
The project is divided into five milestones, which will be
submitted at various points throughout the course to scaffold
learning and ensure quality final
submissions. These milestones will be submitted in Modules
Two, Three, Four, Six and Ten.
This assessment will assess your mastery with respect to the
following course outcomes:
-636.1: Develop effective evaluation strategies drawing
upon the different types of evaluations used for children
impacted by the legal system.
-636.2: Evaluate the influence of cultural, familial, and
environmental factors on the effectiveness of intervention and
treatment strategies.
-636.3: Analyze the effectiveness and appropriateness of
treatment options available for various common
behavioral/psychological issues affecting
children and adolescents.
-636.4: Recommend family therapy treatment options
that take into account the multi-dimensionality of the family
unit.
-636.5: Assess the ethical implications of various
intervention strategies.
Prompt
Specifically, the following critical elements must be addressed:
1. Preparing for Effective Intervention: Outside Factors and
Effective Treatment
a. Describe the potential impact of culture on treatment
b. Describe the potential environmental factors that may
influence the treatment
c. Examine the potential role that family plays on the
effectiveness of intervention and treatment strategies
2. Treatment Options and Family Therapy Evaluation
a. Evaluate appropriate treatment options available for family
therapy treatment and individual treatment for various
behavioral/ psychological
issues affecting children and adolescents who have been
affected the legal system
3. Intervention Strategies
a. Recommend intervention strategies for
behavioral/psychological issues affecting the child and/or
adolescent chosen. Include justification for the
effectiveness of the recommended intervention strategies.
4. Ethical Issues
a. Provides an evaluation of potential ethical issues that should
be considered or guarded against.
b. Construct a plan describing how the ethical issues will be
appropriately addressed
5. Legal System Implications
a. Assess evaluation strategies and tools implemented to aid in
developing a well-rounded treatment plan for a child presenting
with
mental/behavioral issue as a direct result of being involved in
the legal system.
i. Identifies the impact that foster care plays when
implementing and developing a well-rounded treatment plan.
ii. Identifies the impact that being in custody plays when
implementing and developing a well-rounded treatment plan.
Milestones
Milestone One: Intervention Plan Overview
In Task 2-3, submit an overview of your intervention plan. The
overview should include a brief description of a potential
treatment plan for a diagnosis of your
choosing that details a child/adolescent that was influenced by
the legal system and is now showing signs of a mental and/or
behavior disorder.. The paper
should briefly explore ethical considerations when deciding the
best therapeutic interventions to implement, such as individual
or family therapy. This
assignment should be submitted in the form of a 1-2 page paper.
This assignment will be graded using the Milestone One Rubric.
Feedback should be applied
to the Final Project.
Milestone Two: Outside Factors and Effective Treatment
In Task 3-3, describe the factors that influence effective
treatment applicable to your intervention plan. Consider the
impact that culture, environment and
family play on the effectiveness of intervention and treatment
strategies. This assignment should be submitted in the form of
a 2-3 page paper. This assignment
will be graded using the Milestone Two Rubric. Feedback
should be applied to the Final Project.
Milestone Three: Intervention Strategies
In Task 4-2, recommend effective and appropriate treatment
options available for both family therapy treatment and
individual treatment for various
behavioral/ psychological issues affecting children and
adolescents applicable to your intervention plan. It is important
to note that a successful analysis and
interpretation of the scholarly resources are used to substantiate
the criteria. While the quantity of resources is not what ensures
a successful treatment plan, it
is necessary in order to provide a solid research foundation for
your treatment plan. The format should be a 3 to 4 page paper.
This milestone is graded
separately using the Milestone Three Rubric. Feedback should
be applied to the Final Project.
Milestone Four: Ethical Issues
In Task 6-2, evaluate potential ethical issues that should be
considered or guarded against explaining how the ethical issues
have been addressed appropriately in
a detailed plan. The format will be a 2 to 3 page paper. This
assignment will be graded using the Milestone Four Rubric.
Feedback should be applied to the Final
Project.
Final Submission: Intervention Plan
In Task 10-2 you will submit your final Intervention Plan. It
should be a complete, polished artifact containing all of the
critical elements of the final product. It
should reflect the incorporation of feedback gained throughout
the course. This milestone will be graded using the Final
Product Rubric.

Ethical Issues
INTRODUCTION
Ethical issues occur in different professionals and different
occasions. In every occupation or organization, there is a code
of ethics which is expected to be followed. Ethical behavior is
vital. It helps to protect the image of an organization and also
the image of a particular profession. It is therefore to examine
the various ethical issues which surround the issue of therapy.
The intervention plan which was developed was dealing with
the therapy of a mental disorder which is depression. When
treating depression, there are various issues which the therapist
is supposed to address and also to ensure that he or she behaves
in a manner that is not unethical (Koocher, Spiegel, 2008). It is,
therefore, critical to discover the various ethical issues and how
they have been addressed in the intervention plan.
ETHICAL ISSUES
Unethical behavior can lead to many consequences. Some
of these repercussions are faced by the therapist, and others are
encountered by the organization and the client. It is, therefore,
important to ensure that the ethical issues have been addressed.
One of the ways that unethical behavior can affect the
individual therapist is where the doctor can be sued for
unethical behavior in a court of law. The therapist can also be
sucked from his job as a result of behaving unethically. On the
other hand, the unethical behavior of the therapist can harm the
client either his mentally or physically. Unethical behavior also
leads to damaging the reputation of an institution. The public
image is very vital. When the public image has been damaged, it
means that the public has no trust ion the institution. This
affects the institution in a very negative manner since it is no
longer accepted by the community. Facing the ethical issues is,
therefore, imperative. Some of the ethical issues are discussed
below.
One of the main issues is the protection of the confidentiality of
the client. The information that the client disseminates to the
therapist is supposed to be held with the highest confidentiality.
It would be unethical from the therapist or the institution to
disseminate that information to a person who is not authorized.
Another issue would be the therapist having a relationship with
the client. This is not allowed in the code of ethical. It is
believed that when the therapist and the client haves a close
relationship, the work of the therapist will be jeopardized, and
this might add more depression to the client.
HOW TO ADDRESS ETHICAL ISSUES
It is, therefore, important that the relationship between the
client and the therapist remains professional (Pope, Vasquez,
2010). This will ensure that the therapist can deliver efficiently;
hence the client will be assisted. The therapist can also act
unethically by offering to give services to the client in areas
which he or she does not have expertise on. This would be
unethical since the therapist can cause more damage to the
client. Lack of expertise is every critical and therapist are only
supposed to work in an area of their expertise. Therapists are
also not expected to abandon their clients in the name of
termination of the treatment. Some therapist abandons their
clients without completing the therapy. All these ethical issues
should be covered in the intervention plan.
CONCLUSION
The intervention plan has ensured that for individual
therapy, the client is given full confidentiality and privacy
which is required. The therapist cannot perform a family
therapy when it’s supposed to be individual therapy. To tackle
the ethical issues, the therapist should ensure that there is
accurate documentation and that they work within their
expertise (Welfel, 2016). The therapists are also expected to
dwell in the evidence to ensure that the recommendations they
give are evidence based. They should also ensure that they have
given the full client details before they make any decisions. The
consent of the client is very essential. Above all, the therapists
should follow their code of ethics.

Intervention Strategies
Prompt
Recommend at least three effective and appropriate treatment
options available for both family therapy treatment and
individual treatment for various behavioral/psychological
challenges affecting children and adolescents specifically
applicable to your intervention plan.
Family therapy treatment
Family therapy is an established and evidence-based
approach to psychological treatment alongside other
psychotherapeutic modalities. Family therapy is where family
members such as parents, siblings and extended family are
brought into the treatment process (Krestan, 2000). Family
therapy is used for a broad range of dangerous and potentially
psychologically harmful issues such as marital problems,
parent-child conflict, sibling conflict and effects of one’s
illness on the family. Family therapy is essential in such
situations since a family member can impact and is affected by
the actions of the other family members. Family plays a huge
role in our emotional, psychological and spiritual growth.
Therefore, the family setting can affect one’s progress in the
treatment of a mental issue. Family therapy is usually used
where more than one individual is likely to benefit from the
treatment process. There are many treatment strategies for the
family therapy treatment. This include:
Cognitive-behavioral family therapy. This is an approach
to family therapy that focuses on the use of the principles of
behavioral modification and is designed to change the
interactional patterns of family members and restructure
distorted beliefs that come about due to faulty interaction
(Carlson, Sperry & Lewis, 1997). It is based on the fact that
people react to what they think and feel, and so changing these
thoughts and attitudes would remove the dysfunctional patterns
and triggers that set such behavior in motion.
When family members interact, they influence each other
mentally and emotionally. This interaction may lead to the
formation of ill thought and feelings which may lead to an
undesirable reaction due to poor communication. By changing
these attitudes, beliefs, communication patterns and creating a
better interaction model for the family members, the triggers for
undesirable actions such as parent-child conflict will be
eliminated, and the problem will be solved. This method has
been proven to be effective, especially in divorce cases. It has
been shown to increase and better family interaction, reduced
marital distress, and psychological problems. It is a practical
approach to family therapy.
Functional family therapy. Functional family therapy is a
short-term family based therapeutic intervention for at-risk
delinquent youth and their families. It addresses the problems in
the functioning within a family, and the therapist is actively
involved in the process. It is based on the idea that the exposure
to a dysfunctional family setting may act as a trigger for the
development of undesirable traits such as truancy. This
approach seeks to improve within family attributions and family
communication and support (Barton, Alexander, Waldron,
Turner & Warburton, 1985). Parenting skills, youth compliance
and cognitive, behavioral and emotional behavior is targeted for
change, so as to decrease the intense negativity and
dysfunctional behavior patterns. This approach is very useful,
especially in cases of delinquency. In one study done in
Albuquerque, youth taken through this method showed a marked
reduction in the use of marijuana and the increased family
cohesion. This proves that this is a practical approach to family
therapy.
Structural family therapy. This is the evaluation of the
family relationships, patterns, and behavior as exhibited in the
therapy session. This is done so as to assess the structure of the
household (Krestan, 2000). Activities such as role play are used
in the therapy session. The approach is based on the idea that a
family is an emotional unit, and one is inseparable from that
unit. A person will, therefore, be affected by the structures of
the unit. This approach allows the therapist to find faults in the
structure of the family unit and address these issues. This will
help eliminate any unwanted behavior and keep the family unit
intact. This approach has been effective in the interfamily
conflicts. Conflicts between parents and children have been
solved using this method.
Individual therapy
Individual therapy is the process by which one works with
a trained therapist in a safe, caring and confident environment
where they explore their beliefs, behavior and emotions, work
through challenging memories and work toward the desired
change (Horrocks, 2005). The client works hand in hand with
the trained therapist to solve the psychiatric issues. This
approach is an evidence-based approach designed to address
personal mental issues. There are many reasons why people seek
this type of treatment, such as coping with significant life
changes, childhood trauma, depression, anxiety and other
psychological diseases such as bipolar disease and
schizophrenia. There are many treatment approaches used in
this therapy. They include:
Psychotherapy. Psychotherapy is the practice of spending
time with a skilled therapist to help diagnose and treat mental
and emotional problems. It takes many forms such as cognitive
behavioral therapy, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy and
psychodynamic therapy (Smith & Glass 1977). Cognitive
behavioral therapy is where the psychological treatments are
treated by boosting happiness by modifying negative emotions.
This approach focuses on generating solutions and encouraging
clients to discard distorted thoughts and change destructive
behavior. This method is especially useful for depression.
Psychodynamic therapy is based on self-exploration, where
the client identifies their unconscious emotions caused by
suppressions and the therapist shows how they may affect the
client’s functioning. It is a psychoanalysis to probe the cause of
a particular behavior, and from there work on ways to treat it.
Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is where the client and
therapist evaluate the client’s behavior without deeming it as
right or wrong, and they evaluate them objectively to find the
cause of the behavior. This approach allows both of them to
work together to come to a conclusion. It is a practical
approach. It has been proven to help in trying times of the
clients such as when making life adjustments. It is often the
most recommended type of individual therapy by experts.
Expression or creative arts therapy. This is the kind of
treatment where the person is allowed to express their emotions
in writing, music, art or dance. The therapist encourages them
to engage in these activities to express themselves. This type of
therapy is based on the belief that people can help heal
themselves through art, music or other expressive acts. It allows
them to purge their emotions and keep them calm, contributing
to repair their psychological health. A study has found that this
therapeutic approach can reduce depression symptoms among
women who were victims of domestic violence. It has also been
shown to calm down anxiety and reduce lash outs from people
with diagnosed mental conditions.
Behavioral techniques. The aim of these procedures is to
allow people to see their behavior as learned behaviors that can
be modified, without looking for any psychological connection.
The theory is based on the idea that once the behavior is
changed, the feeling is also changed (Dryden & Reeves, 2014).
Many behavioral techniques can be employed. These include the
behavior modification technique. This is where an undesired
behavior is eliminated by providing positive reinforcement for
acceptable behavior. Systematic desensitization is another
approach. This is where one is exposed to a feared object or
experience so as to overcome their fears. Another technique is
relaxation training. This is where through techniques such as
visualization and deep breathing, clients learn to control fear
and anxiety. This method has been proven to be useful in the
cases of extreme anxiety, fear or anger management. It is,
therefore, a valuable tool in individual therapy.

OUTSIDE FACTORS 4
Outside Factors

Outside Factors
Depression can be treated by the application of various methods
and strategies. However, there are various factors which may
interfere with the effectiveness of these treatment strategies. We
have been able to see that there are different strategies which
can be used to treat depression among young adults who have
gone through a legal system. Some of these strategies include
therapy and change of lifestyle of the child. These policies are
meant to ensure that the child has been able to recover from
depression, and they have been able to continue with their life
normally. However, there are various outside factors which can
affect the effectiveness of these treatment strategies. Some of
these factors include culture, environment, and family, and they
are explained below.
Culture
Culture is a very important aspect when it comes to successful
depression treatment. Different cultures have different ways of
dealing with situations. Some cultures support individualism
and other support collectivism. As a result, when a person wants
to change their lifestyle as a way of fighting depression, some
cultures will support that move and others will let the child do
it on his own. The effectiveness of the treatment is therefore
affected. If the culture supports efforts to reduce depression, the
treatment strategies will be effectiveness (Kleinman, Good,
2015). Another way that culture affects treatment is the beliefs
of the culture. Some cultures have beliefs that depression
cannot be treated, or it’s a curse. This affects the treatment
procedure in a negative manner. These cultural factors,
therefore, affect the effectiveness of the treatment strategies.
The environment
The environment is also an important factor when it comes to
the treatment of depression. The environment is expected to be
conducive to support the treatment strategies of the illness. One
of the main environment factors which can affect the treatment
plan of depression is an environment which is not conducive for
exercises. One of the ways to treat depression is through
exercises, if the environment does not support effective exercise
then the treatment strategies will be affected. A conducive
environment is, therefore, one of the environmental factors to
affect treatment (Evans, Foa, Gur, Hendin, Brien, Seligman,
2005). Another environmental factor is where the kid lives in an
environment which is hostile and which increases stress for the
kid. This makes the treatment strategies less efficient, and it
becomes hard to treat depression. For example, an environment
with high crime rates, air pollution and also noise pollution.
Family
The family is the most important outside factor to the
effectiveness of the treatment strategies. The kid needs family
support to ensure that they have gone through the treatment
process successfully. The family supports the child financially,
physically and mentally. One family factor which can affect the
treatment process is if the family does not provide money for
therapy. This will interfere with the treatment. Another factor is
if the parents of the child do not support the kid
psychologically. If the kid is psychological support, they will
be able to exercise more, and they will be optimistic of getting
better (Rey, Birmaher, 2012). The family is therefore very
critical when it comes to the success of the treatment strategies
for depression.

Intervention Plan Overview
Treatment Overview
The diagnosis which is will be considered in this paper is
depression. Depression is a mental illness which can be caused
by children or young adults who have gone through the legal
system. There are various treatment methods for the depression
problem. One of the ways that one can be able to treat
depression is through changing the lifestyle of a person. There
are various lifestyle changes which can help to reduce
depression. One of these changes is exercise. Exercise has been
recommended on many occasions as an effective method of
reducing depression. Exercise is said to help a person to clear
their minds which also reduces the deep thinking. Thinking too
much is said to lead to stress which causes depression. Another
change is nutrition. Eating well is said to be vital for both
mental and physical health hence it will help reduce depression
(Harris, 2013). Having enough sleep can also contribute to
reducing depression.
Social support is also a good thing to treat depression. The
young adult who depressed should keep regular contact with
friends and relatives. This will help reduce stress. A person can
also opt to go for personal therapy. Therapy have been said to
be the most efficient way of dealing with depression. Therapy
helps a person to understand their relationships with other
people hence they can know how to handle their condition. They
are assisted to behold better relationships and also to improve
their current relationships (Levesque, 2017). The therapist also
helps to establish healthy boundaries which will help the person
to overcome depression effectively. The therapy is also
important since it helps a person to handle the life’s problems
hence depression will be reduced.
Legal system involvement and impact
The legal statement can be involved in the depression of a
young adult. This is because of a teenager is locked in a cell the
teenager might experience various mental difficulties because of
social seclusion. When the teenager is secluded from families
and friends, they might experience, a mental breakdown which
affects them. The fact that they are locked for various mistakes,
and they are made to look bad, makes them feel bad about
themselves, and this can cause stress. The legal process is
sometimes very harsh for kids, and they are not able to handle
hence they experience depression (Horwitz, 2002). Some of the
juvenile prisons have harsh conditions where these children are
bullied. The legal system has, therefore, an impact on the
children’s life, and they always need guidance to get back to the
public life. One of the implications of depression is that it can
lead to suicide where the kids feel like they are not worthy to
live. They usually think that their life is so messed up, or no
one wants them, and this can make them take their lives.
Ethical considerations
When taking therapy, ethics play a significant role. This is
because the therapist is expected to act ethically to ensure that
the client is well served. One of the ethical considerations is to
conduct individual therapy. This is because the teenager might
have some issues which he or she does not want his family to
know about. It will be therefore ethical for the therapist to
ensure that the process is confidential. Ethical consideration is,
therefore, vital when it comes to therapy. The client is also
expected to share some information which should be protected.
Ethics remain very essential in treatment.

PSY 636 Final Project Guidelines and Grading Guide O.docx

  • 1. PSY 636: Final Project Guidelines and Grading Guide Overview The final project for this course is an intervention plan with recommendations for the treatment of a child/adolescent who has been affected by the legal system and now is showing signs of a mental and/or behavioral disorder. The final product requires students to fully define and operationalize a treatment intervention plan. The finished product will incorporate the application of theories and concepts taught in the course to substantiate the following criteria: 1. An examination of the factors that would specifically affect treatment in the case (familial, environmental, etc.) 2. A substantiated evaluation of various treatment options outlining their appropriateness 3. A recommendation of one or more intervention strategies with justification as to why they selected the one(s) that they did 4. An evaluation of potential ethical issues that should be considered or guarded against and how their plan does so The project is divided into five milestones, which will be

  • 20. Prepared by Dr. Norman St. Clair, Dreeben School of Education, University of the Incarnate Word, 2014 Running head: ETHICAL ISSUES 1 ETHICAL ISSUES 5 Ethical Issues Obinna Okwara Southern New Hampshire University Ethical Issues INTRODUCTION Ethical issues occur in different professionals and different occasions. In every occupation or organization, there is a code of ethics which is expected to be followed. Ethical behavior is vital. It helps to protect the image of an organization and also the image of a particular profession. It is therefore to examine the various ethical issues which surround the issue of therapy. The intervention plan which was developed was dealing with the therapy of a mental disorder which is depression. When treating depression, there are various issues which the therapist is supposed to address and also to ensure that he or she behaves in a manner that is not unethical (Koocher, Spiegel, 2008). It is, therefore, critical to discover the various ethical issues and how they have been addressed in the intervention plan. ETHICAL ISSUES Unethical behavior can lead to many consequences. Some
  • 21. of these repercussions are faced by the therapist, and others are encountered by the organization and the client. It is, therefore, important to ensure that the ethical issues have been addressed. One of the ways that unethical behavior can affect the individual therapist is where the doctor can be sued for unethical behavior in a court of law. The therapist can also be sucked from his job as a result of behaving unethically. On the other hand, the unethical behavior of the therapist can harm the client either his mentally or physically. Unethical behavior also leads to damaging the reputation of an institution. The public image is very vital. When the public image has been damaged, it means that the public has no trust ion the institution. This affects the institution in a very negative manner since it is no longer accepted by the community. Facing the ethical issues is, therefore, imperative. Some of the ethical issues are discussed below. One of the main issues is the protection of the confidentiality of the client. The information that the client disseminates to the therapist is supposed to be held with the highest confidentiality. It would be unethical from the therapist or the institution to disseminate that information to a person who is not authorized. Another issue would be the therapist having a relationship with the client. This is not allowed in the code of ethical. It is believed that when the therapist and the client haves a close relationship, the work of the therapist will be jeopardized, and this might add more depression to the client. HOW TO ADDRESS ETHICAL ISSUES It is, therefore, important that the relationship between the client and the therapist remains professional (Pope, Vasquez, 2010). This will ensure that the therapist can deliver efficiently; hence the client will be assisted. The therapist can also act unethically by offering to give services to the client in areas which he or she does not have expertise on. This would be unethical since the therapist can cause more damage to the client. Lack of expertise is every critical and therapist are only supposed to work in an area of their expertise. Therapists are
  • 22. also not expected to abandon their clients in the name of termination of the treatment. Some therapist abandons their clients without completing the therapy. All these ethical issues should be covered in the intervention plan. CONCLUSION The intervention plan has ensured that for individual therapy, the client is given full confidentiality and privacy which is required. The therapist cannot perform a family therapy when it’s supposed to be individual therapy. To tackle the ethical issues, the therapist should ensure that there is accurate documentation and that they work within their expertise (Welfel, 2016). The therapists are also expected to dwell in the evidence to ensure that the recommendations they give are evidence based. They should also ensure that they have given the full client details before they make any decisions. The consent of the client is very essential. Above all, the therapists should follow their code of ethics. References Koocher, G. & Spiegel, P. (2008). Ethics in psychology and the mental health professions: standards and cases. • 23. INTERVENTION STRATEGIES 7 Intervention Strategies Obinna Okwara Southern New Hampshire University Intervention Strategies Prompt Recommend at least three effective and appropriate treatment options available for both family therapy treatment and individual treatment for various behavioral/psychological challenges affecting children and adolescents specifically applicable to your intervention plan. Family therapy treatment Family therapy is an established and evidence-based approach to psychological treatment alongside other psychotherapeutic modalities. Family therapy is where family members such as parents, siblings and extended family are brought into the treatment process (Krestan, 2000). Family therapy is used for a broad range of dangerous and potentially psychologically harmful issues such as marital problems, parent-child conflict, sibling conflict and effects of one’s illness on the family. Family therapy is essential in such situations since a family member can impact and is affected by the actions of the other family members. Family plays a huge role in our emotional, psychological and spiritual growth. Therefore, the family setting can affect one’s progress in the treatment of a mental issue. Family therapy is usually used
  • 24. where more than one individual is likely to benefit from the treatment process. There are many treatment strategies for the family therapy treatment. This include: Cognitive-behavioral family therapy. This is an approach to family therapy that focuses on the use of the principles of behavioral modification and is designed to change the interactional patterns of family members and restructure distorted beliefs that come about due to faulty interaction (Carlson, Sperry & Lewis, 1997). It is based on the fact that people react to what they think and feel, and so changing these thoughts and attitudes would remove the dysfunctional patterns and triggers that set such behavior in motion. When family members interact, they influence each other mentally and emotionally. This interaction may lead to the formation of ill thought and feelings which may lead to an undesirable reaction due to poor communication. By changing these attitudes, beliefs, communication patterns and creating a better interaction model for the family members, the triggers for undesirable actions such as parent-child conflict will be eliminated, and the problem will be solved. This method has been proven to be effective, especially in divorce cases. It has been shown to increase and better family interaction, reduced marital distress, and psychological problems. It is a practical approach to family therapy. Functional family therapy. Functional family therapy is a short-term family based therapeutic intervention for at-risk delinquent youth and their families. It addresses the problems in the functioning within a family, and the therapist is actively involved in the process. It is based on the idea that the exposure to a dysfunctional family setting may act as a trigger for the development of undesirable traits such as truancy. This approach seeks to improve within family attributions and family communication and support (Barton, Alexander, Waldron, Turner & Warburton, 1985). Parenting skills, youth compliance and cognitive, behavioral and emotional behavior is targeted for change, so as to decrease the intense negativity and
  • 25. dysfunctional behavior patterns. This approach is very useful, especially in cases of delinquency. In one study done in Albuquerque, youth taken through this method showed a marked reduction in the use of marijuana and the increased family cohesion. This proves that this is a practical approach to family therapy. Structural family therapy. This is the evaluation of the family relationships, patterns, and behavior as exhibited in the therapy session. This is done so as to assess the structure of the household (Krestan, 2000). Activities such as role play are used in the therapy session. The approach is based on the idea that a family is an emotional unit, and one is inseparable from that unit. A person will, therefore, be affected by the structures of the unit. This approach allows the therapist to find faults in the structure of the family unit and address these issues. This will help eliminate any unwanted behavior and keep the family unit intact. This approach has been effective in the interfamily conflicts. Conflicts between parents and children have been solved using this method. Individual therapy Individual therapy is the process by which one works with a trained therapist in a safe, caring and confident environment where they explore their beliefs, behavior and emotions, work through challenging memories and work toward the desired change (Horrocks, 2005). The client works hand in hand with the trained therapist to solve the psychiatric issues. This approach is an evidence-based approach designed to address personal mental issues. There are many reasons why people seek this type of treatment, such as coping with significant life changes, childhood trauma, depression, anxiety and other psychological diseases such as bipolar disease and schizophrenia. There are many treatment approaches used in this therapy. They include: Psychotherapy. Psychotherapy is the practice of spending time with a skilled therapist to help diagnose and treat mental and emotional problems. It takes many forms such as cognitive
  • 26. behavioral therapy, mindfulness-based cognitive therapy and psychodynamic therapy (Smith & Glass 1977). Cognitive behavioral therapy is where the psychological treatments are treated by boosting happiness by modifying negative emotions. This approach focuses on generating solutions and encouraging clients to discard distorted thoughts and change destructive behavior. This method is especially useful for depression. Psychodynamic therapy is based on self-exploration, where the client identifies their unconscious emotions caused by suppressions and the therapist shows how they may affect the client’s functioning. It is a psychoanalysis to probe the cause of a particular behavior, and from there work on ways to treat it. Mindfulness-based cognitive therapy is where the client and therapist evaluate the client’s behavior without deeming it as right or wrong, and they evaluate them objectively to find the cause of the behavior. This approach allows both of them to work together to come to a conclusion. It is a practical approach. It has been proven to help in trying times of the clients such as when making life adjustments. It is often the most recommended type of individual therapy by experts. Expression or creative arts therapy. This is the kind of treatment where the person is allowed to express their emotions in writing, music, art or dance. The therapist encourages them to engage in these activities to express themselves. This type of therapy is based on the belief that people can help heal themselves through art, music or other expressive acts. It allows them to purge their emotions and keep them calm, contributing to repair their psychological health. A study has found that this therapeutic approach can reduce depression symptoms among women who were victims of domestic violence. It has also been shown to calm down anxiety and reduce lash outs from people with diagnosed mental conditions. Behavioral techniques. The aim of these procedures is to allow people to see their behavior as learned behaviors that can be modified, without looking for any psychological connection. The theory is based on the idea that once the behavior is
  • 27. changed, the feeling is also changed (Dryden & Reeves, 2014). Many behavioral techniques can be employed. These include the behavior modification technique. This is where an undesired behavior is eliminated by providing positive reinforcement for acceptable behavior. Systematic desensitization is another approach. This is where one is exposed to a feared object or experience so as to overcome their fears. Another technique is relaxation training. This is where through techniques such as visualization and deep breathing, clients learn to control fear and anxiety. This method has been proven to be useful in the cases of extreme anxiety, fear or anger management. It is, therefore, a valuable tool in individual therapy. • 28. Running head: OUTSIDE FACTORS 1 OUTSIDE FACTORS 4 Outside Factors Obinna Okwara Southern New Hampshire University Outside Factors Depression can be treated by the application of various methods and strategies. However, there are various factors which may interfere with the effectiveness of these treatment strategies. We have been able to see that there are different strategies which can be used to treat depression among young adults who have gone through a legal system. Some of these strategies include therapy and change of lifestyle of the child. These policies are meant to ensure that the child has been able to recover from depression, and they have been able to continue with their life normally. However, there are various outside factors which can affect the effectiveness of these treatment strategies. Some of these factors include culture, environment, and family, and they are explained below. Culture Culture is a very important aspect when it comes to successful depression treatment. Different cultures have different ways of
  • 29. dealing with situations. Some cultures support individualism and other support collectivism. As a result, when a person wants to change their lifestyle as a way of fighting depression, some cultures will support that move and others will let the child do it on his own. The effectiveness of the treatment is therefore affected. If the culture supports efforts to reduce depression, the treatment strategies will be effectiveness (Kleinman, Good, 2015). Another way that culture affects treatment is the beliefs of the culture. Some cultures have beliefs that depression cannot be treated, or it’s a curse. This affects the treatment procedure in a negative manner. These cultural factors, therefore, affect the effectiveness of the treatment strategies. The environment The environment is also an important factor when it comes to the treatment of depression. The environment is expected to be conducive to support the treatment strategies of the illness. One of the main environment factors which can affect the treatment plan of depression is an environment which is not conducive for exercises. One of the ways to treat depression is through exercises, if the environment does not support effective exercise then the treatment strategies will be affected. A conducive environment is, therefore, one of the environmental factors to affect treatment (Evans, Foa, Gur, Hendin, Brien, Seligman, 2005). Another environmental factor is where the kid lives in an environment which is hostile and which increases stress for the kid. This makes the treatment strategies less efficient, and it becomes hard to treat depression. For example, an environment with high crime rates, air pollution and also noise pollution. Family The family is the most important outside factor to the effectiveness of the treatment strategies. The kid needs family support to ensure that they have gone through the treatment process successfully. The family supports the child financially, physically and mentally. One family factor which can affect the treatment process is if the family does not provide money for
  • 30. therapy. This will interfere with the treatment. Another factor is if the parents of the child do not support the kid psychologically. If the kid is psychological support, they will be able to exercise more, and they will be optimistic of getting better (Rey, Birmaher, 2012). The family is therefore very critical when it comes to the success of the treatment strategies for depression. References Evans, D., Foa, E., Gur, R., Hendin, H., Brien, C. & Seligman, M. (2005). • 31. Intervention Plan Overview Treatment Overview The diagnosis which is will be considered in this paper is depression. Depression is a mental illness which can be caused by children or young adults who have gone through the legal system. There are various treatment methods for the depression problem. One of the ways that one can be able to treat depression is through changing the lifestyle of a person. There are various lifestyle changes which can help to reduce depression. One of these changes is exercise. Exercise has been recommended on many occasions as an effective method of reducing depression. Exercise is said to help a person to clear their minds which also reduces the deep thinking. Thinking too much is said to lead to stress which causes depression. Another change is nutrition. Eating well is said to be vital for both mental and physical health hence it will help reduce depression (Harris, 2013). Having enough sleep can also contribute to reducing depression. Social support is also a good thing to treat depression. The young adult who depressed should keep regular contact with friends and relatives. This will help reduce stress. A person can also opt to go for personal therapy. Therapy have been said to be the most efficient way of dealing with depression. Therapy helps a person to understand their relationships with other people hence they can know how to handle their condition. They are assisted to behold better relationships and also to improve their current relationships (Levesque, 2017). The therapist also helps to establish healthy boundaries which will help the person to overcome depression effectively. The therapy is also important since it helps a person to handle the life’s problems hence depression will be reduced.
  • 32. Legal system involvement and impact The legal statement can be involved in the depression of a young adult. This is because of a teenager is locked in a cell the teenager might experience various mental difficulties because of social seclusion. When the teenager is secluded from families and friends, they might experience, a mental breakdown which affects them. The fact that they are locked for various mistakes, and they are made to look bad, makes them feel bad about themselves, and this can cause stress. The legal process is sometimes very harsh for kids, and they are not able to handle hence they experience depression (Horwitz, 2002). Some of the juvenile prisons have harsh conditions where these children are bullied. The legal system has, therefore, an impact on the children’s life, and they always need guidance to get back to the public life. One of the implications of depression is that it can lead to suicide where the kids feel like they are not worthy to live. They usually think that their life is so messed up, or no one wants them, and this can make them take their lives. Ethical considerations When taking therapy, ethics play a significant role. This is because the therapist is expected to act ethically to ensure that the client is well served. One of the ethical considerations is to conduct individual therapy. This is because the teenager might have some issues which he or she does not want his family to know about. It will be therefore ethical for the therapist to ensure that the process is confidential. Ethical consideration is, therefore, vital when it comes to therapy. The client is also expected to share some information which should be protected. Ethics remain very essential in treatment.
