Lessons from Psalm 4
Have you ever had a sleepless night because of
anxiety and problems weighing you down?
Maybe they were brought on by your enemies,
finances, or family or church trouble?
Then you know where David was in Psalm 4.
Even when torn by physical and emotional pain,
one can still have restful sleep in God’s presence.
Psalm 4:8: Message of the psalm brings sleep to
the psalmist.
How can we find sleep on those sleepless nights?
Lessons from Psalm 4
Count your blessings (v. 1).
 Psalmist faces a pressing need, but his confidence in
God remains strong.
 David is remembering the relief God has given him
from distresses.
 Count your deliverances. Count your blessings.
Focus on God (v. 2-3).
 David had a choice: Focus on men who were lying
about him or focus on God who had set him apart.
 We have the same choice (I Peter 5:8; Ephesians
1:3-14; Colossians 1:13).
Lessons from Psalm 4
Trust in the Lord (v. 4-5).
 Do not let anger or anxiety erode our faith in God.
 We must not give place to the devil (Eph. 4:26-27).
 Rather than figuring out how we can get even or deal
with trouble, trust in the Lord.
 That starts with offering the right sacrifices (Psalm
51:17).
 A broken spirit, a broken and contrite heart.
 We need to trust God to fix the mess we’ve gotten
ourselves into.
Lessons from Psalm 4
Find your joy above (v. 6-7).
 There’s never an uncertainty with God.
 There’s pleasure in the presence of God (Numbers
6:24-26).
 Seek what is above, not what is below (Col. 3:1-4).
 When we have sleepless nights, we need to ask where
our treasure is (Matthew 6:19-21).
 God has set aside an inheritance that is waiting for us
(I Peter 1:4-5).
Psalm 4:8: Peace that God gives is a peace that
enables an anxious person to lie down and sleep.
