Proposal for PhD computer science
1. Simplicity is the ultimate sophistication.
Leonardo da Vinci
This quote not only inspired me all my life but also helped me plan my career. I believe that
anything made by man is simple enough to understand; it has a lot of takers and is not
confined to a select few. As such, Education not only enhances personal development, but
also competitiveness. When at school I was introduced to computers but the real
understanding came when I began my college education. The broad curriculum helped me
have an understanding of the various aspects of Computer Science. My academic
performance reflects my deep association and interest in the field of computer science. I
have always been fascinated whenever I read books on Theory of Computation, Design of
Computer software and Artificial Intelligence.
I remember my computer science teacher who helped me begin my relationship to Computer
science and Engineering when I enrolled for an undergraduate study in Computer Science
and which was a richly rewarding experience. Bumps, potholes and detours all came my
way when I was studying in college. Often I encountered such signs like 'trespassers will be
prosecuted'. The going was not smooth, but I kept myself attentive and my eyes open, I just
focused on the way ahead and that attitude made the difference, for the good of course.
2. Today, we find ourselves in the golden age of Computer Science. The various facets of this
relatively young science are growing at an unrivalled pace. One probable reason for this
vigorous growth could be that Computer Science, like mathematics, profoundly affects
every other field known to man. At this exciting juncture, I registered there is always great
rewards that comes your way with innovative ideas, ideas that can change the future of all of
us. It is the quest to participate in the discovery of these ideas that has fuelled my desire to
further my education in this discipline by pursuing a PhD in Computer Science.
As a part of my curriculum, I had been exposed to study of courses like ‘C’, ‘C++’, Data
Structures, Computer Organization, Microprocessors, Computer Networks and Software. I
also have the opportunity to learn advanced subjects like Theory of Computation, Artificial
Intelligence, Algorithm Design and Analysis, File Structures and Network and Software
programming. The software skills acquired by me during my graduate days ultimately
culminated in my final year project which I created for a community based local library, it
was software that automatically emailed those library members who defaulted to return
books timely. I also presented a paper at a symposium held in our university which was
appreciated.
Since my childhood days I have always been an active member of the community in one way or
another. I have been a community fellow held in high esteem by everyone due to my social
activities, especially organizing of blood donation camps and health awareness programs. I
opted to work as an entry level computer software engineer at prestigious organization,
because after my Bachelors in Computer Science, I thought it to be best suited to my skills
and qualifications. My journey through Computer Science has led me through other projects,
some successful and some not quite so.
It was here that I was provided with a initial training program in software development for more
than six months and thus I got a solid foundation in software development technologies as
well as software engineering principles (SDLC). I considered every topic in a wide range of
materials which were covered during the training period, as inherently motivating and
important to my work in software development while I also continued to pursue
certifications in Microsoft.Net Technologies like MCAD, MCTS, and MCPD. I was able to
enhance my mentor skills and assisted in conducting training programs for the new entrants
and juniors in programming languages, while myself I enhanced my wisdom of advanced
concepts like software design patterns, architectural patterns, programming languages like
C#.Net, Java and advanced technologies like SOA based Web services, XML programming
and Component object Model (COM) development.
3. I also got a chance to assist on building digital content management systems which allowed
document integration, managed access, workflow including versioning. This opportunity
also helped me understand EDMS solution integration and customization. To expand of
knowledge of SDMS technology I got myself transferred and here I started working as a
developer on various product offerings related to unified content managent solutions. This
project was the highlight of my academic career. Success on this project gave me the
confidence to provide software solutions to real-life problems. With the course of time I was
capable of working on large projects which required greater skills. After sometime I was
offered a position of a Program Analyst, which included executing enterprise projects for
various clients. The aim of the project was designing a software program intended to be used
in Mortgage field and was thought to be huge and complex in nature, essential to it was
methodical development for its rewarding completion, this project was challenging and
demanding as it has issues about the knowledge capture and development processes, so this
was an entirely different project for me. As there was growing concern in the management,
so I started to study software engineering and skills for the management of control
complexity during the development of large systems.
Today on watching the brisk developments in computer software development processes I
changed my focus to the study and knowledge of various disciples of computer science. The
great potential of ground breaking protocols like Multicast' and applications like 'Voice Over
IP' and 'Virtual Private Networks', I was just too excited and interested about the immense
potential for a new research in this field. I found academic interest in areas ranging from
software engineering, compilers, distributed systems and advanced computing as I have
reached the point in my professional development and individual study where a Doctor of
philosophy in computer science seems befitting and alluring, as it is required for my
continued growth in the field.
I am interested in specializing in Artificial Intelligence and its application in various fields. I
consider AI to be that field of Computer Science which will have biggest impact on human-
computer interactions in the future though unique software. I also believe that AI encompasses,
in itself, every human activity, because the primary aim of AI is to make computers as intelligent
as humans with the help of smart software. I have learned from my experiences in the creation of
artificially intelligent systems that though the task is difficult, the results are rewarding and
watching the resultant system at work is an inspiration in itself. I am also interested in the study
of programming languages.
4. Larry Page and Sergey Brin, famous creators of Google happen to be my role models because
they created a fascinating and unique technology, and were instrumental in making this
technology available to people. My ambition is to be able to create new technology and also
make it sure that the common man can get its best utility. In pursuit of this dream I wish to
do my Ph.D., in Computer Science.
I love to be in the field of research and teaching. My mentors, teachers as well as my colleagues,
all have encouraged me to choose your prestigious University, as not just for me alone but to
all of them yours is a highly reputed University known for its modern research facilities and
great resources in the field of computing. I hope that a Ph.D,, in Software Engineering to be
highly challenging but ultimately rewarding. I look forward to learn and develop my skills
as a student. I feel confident that I will be allowed to carry on my quest of knowledge at
your University. I hope to bring with me a good knowledge of the fundamental of Computer
Science, a love towards teaching and an attitude to a rewarding teamwork. I am confident
that studying at your university will expose me to a deeper area of my chosen topic and will
provide me a much optimized environment to expand my knowledge on the subject through
associations and interactions with my supervisor and other faculty experts in the department.
