Film proposal
1. Film proposal:
Synopsis-The ‘Unsung (cold case)’ is a cautionary tale authorities have released to the public
as a warning to teenagers, showing the consequences of actively seeking out danger. Using
real footage found in 2016, we follow two teenagers as they set out to record the supposed
domain of a criminal. Discovering much more than just a petty delinquent, they disappear
by sunrise. Never to be seen again. Authorities were unable to uncover the whereabouts of
said teenagers after finding their camera; eventually declaring it a cold case.
Logline -The Unsung (cold case) is a found footage horror film about two teenagers who set
out to capture a supposed ‘dangerous criminal’s hangout’ on camera and run into extreme
danger, disappearing overnight.
Screenplay structure-
Act 1: The Set Up: Approximately 1min 30-50 seconds. This section will introduce the two
main characters, containing conversations about visiting the criminal’s hangout. This section
will have a light hearted tone with high key lighting, to create a false sense of security for
the audience.
Act 2: Will be roughly 1min 30-50seconds. This will be the characters arriving at the location,
setting up and realizing that they ae in danger.
Act 3: This final section will be the two characters encountering the criminal and desperately
trying to avoid them, building up to the final scene where the teenagers are finally caught
and the screen cuts off. There isn’t a typical ‘resolution’ because the film has an open
ending.
Characters-
Molly (protagonist): Female, 16 years old. The rash and irresponsible film student that
holds the camera throughout the film, she influences her friend (jack) to visit the domain.
Refuses to fully acknowledge the danger of the situation until the end of Act 2 and Act 3.
Jack (Deuteragonist/sidekick): Male, 17. Is convinced by Molly to visit the domain, he
is the more cautious friend. Even though he willingly goes along with it he gives multiple
warnings about the danger they are putting themselves in.
The criminal (antagonist/villain): The age, gender and appearance is unknown; this
remains a mystery throughout the film. Is rumored to visit a certain location frequently,
they are suspected to have killed the two teenagers after encountering them.
Film Treatment-
Molly (16) is a free spirited filmstudent with a tendency to rush into high-risk situations.
After hearing a local rumour about a supposed criminal’s hangout, she thinks it could get
her attention online and convinces her best friend Jack to visit the location. What starts as
an innocent grab for fame quickly spirals into a mystery baffling police years later.
When she finally convinces her doubtful sidekick, she sets out to visit the criminal’s domain.
However, it turns out to be more than just a rumour after multiple close encounters from
said lawbreaker.
The game of cat and mouse eventually ends when Molly and Jack are cornered, police
suspect they were killed. Despite their theories, the found footage cuts off and no bodies
2. were ever found. Years later the case is declared cold and authorities decide to release the
footage as a warning to teenagers what happens when you seek out trouble.
Target audience-
My target audience is teenagers (13-19), this is because the film is a warning directed
towards that particular age demographic. Many teenagers have a habit of being impulsive
and disregarding danger, especially when it comes to seeking fame online. I know this age
demographic would be interested in this film the most because it has relatable characters
who mimic their own behavior. Therefore, they are able to connect with the storyline better
than adults who are more mature. My unique selling point is the fact that it brings up the
topic of online fame, which is a topic found footage films don’t often bring up and
something heavily debated about nowadays.
