This document discusses racial discrimination and racism in schools in Brazil. It discusses how racial prejudice is internalized in culture and society in veiled ways. It mentions "recreational racism" which portrays negative stereotypes of Black and indigenous people as jokes or humor but still contributes to their disqualification. When racist expressions are constantly normalized in the classroom, it places Black students in an uncomfortable position. It discusses the paths of Martin Luther King Jr. who inspired the character Professor X, representing harmonious coexistence, in contrast to Malcolm X who inspired Magneto and represented a more rigid defense of mutant rights through potential use of force.

2024.06.01 Introducing a competency framework for languag learning materials ...Sandy Millin
http://sandymillin.wordpress.com/iateflwebinar2024
Published classroom materials form the basis of syllabuses, drive teacher professional development, and have a potentially huge influence on learners, teachers and education systems. All teachers also create their own materials, whether a few sentences on a blackboard, a highly-structured fully-realised online course, or anything in between. Despite this, the knowledge and skills needed to create effective language learning materials are rarely part of teacher training, and are mostly learnt by trial and error.
Knowledge and skills frameworks, generally called competency frameworks, for ELT teachers, trainers and managers have existed for a few years now. However, until I created one for my MA dissertation, there wasn’t one drawing together what we need to know and do to be able to effectively produce language learning materials.
This webinar will introduce you to my framework, highlighting the key competencies I identified from my research. It will also show how anybody involved in language teaching (any language, not just English!), teacher training, managing schools or developing language learning materials can benefit from using the framework.

A Strategic Approach: GenAI in EducationPeter Windle
Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies such as Generative AI, Image Generators and Large Language Models have had a dramatic impact on teaching, learning and assessment over the past 18 months. The most immediate threat AI posed was to Academic Integrity with Higher Education Institutes (HEIs) focusing their efforts on combating the use of GenAI in assessment. Guidelines were developed for staff and students, policies put in place too. Innovative educators have forged paths in the use of Generative AI for teaching, learning and assessments leading to pockets of transformation springing up across HEIs, often with little or no top-down guidance, support or direction.
This Gasta posits a strategic approach to integrating AI into HEIs to prepare staff, students and the curriculum for an evolving world and workplace. We will highlight the advantages of working with these technologies beyond the realm of teaching, learning and assessment by considering prompt engineering skills, industry impact, curriculum changes, and the need for staff upskilling. In contrast, not engaging strategically with Generative AI poses risks, including falling behind peers, missed opportunities and failing to ensure our graduates remain employable. The rapid evolution of AI technologies necessitates a proactive and strategic approach if we are to remain relevant.

1. Watch the video and check the sentences you listen.
( ) When we talk about racial discrimination in schools, we are certainly referring to discriminatory, prejudiced
practices, that involve a universe composed of racial relations between students and teachers.
( ) Racial prejudice is already so internalized in our culture that it is sometimes not evident to many students
and professionals in most schools. These ways of violence are manifested in a veiled way.
( ) Several racist expressions present in the daily life of Brazilians are reproduced in the school environment.
( ) The term Recreational Racism refers to “jokes” that are SEEN AS harmless in a routine of social interaction
but which have a racial imprint in which they associate the physical and cultural characteristics of Black And
indigenous people as something inferior
( ) Recreational racism is camouflaged in a “category of humor” that portrays “blackness as a set of aesthetically
unpleasant characteristics and as a sign of moral inferiority”.
( ) As it is structural, racism manifested in the form of “humor” reinforces the unconscious biases built up over
the years by society and collaborates to legitimize an aggression made up for fun.
( ) It may seem like simple “words”, “jokes” or “just a way of talking”, but these offensive words contribute to
the process of disqualification of black people, reinforcing in the collective unconscious the prejudiced
relationship between blackness and negativity.
( ) When racist expressions are constantly naturalized and permeate the classroom, the black student is placed
in an uncomfortable position of devaluing or invisibility
( ) How to behave when facing these situations of racism, an aggressive stance saying fire all the racists or a
response of non-violence and awareness.
( ) It’s impossible to imagine American pop culture without Spider-Man. Or the Hulk. Or, thanks
to a decade’s worth of mega-blockbuster films, Iron Man, Thor, Dr. Strange, and Ant-Man. These
stories—all co-creations of Marvel Comics Stan Lee.
( ) That metaphor extended to the characters themselves, with Professor X and his vision of
harmonious human-mutant coexistence standing in for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. while Magneto’s
rigid attitude toward the defense of mutantkind reflected the philosophy of Malcolm X. Malcolm X
was a prominent human rights activist who rose to fame as the Nation of Islam’s chief spokesperson. He was
recognised for laying the foundation of the Black Power movement in the United States and being an advocate
for Black empowerment.
( ) The X-Men’s struggles in a world defined by systemic persecution has been proved malleable
enough to outlast the civil rights era. Beginning in the 1980s and continuing through today, the X -
Men have been adopted by those fighting for LGBTQ rights who see the mutants’ struggle for
acceptance and equality as their own.
( ) The path followed by Martin L King, who inspired the character Professor X, is a path of confronting with
compassion, awareness and non-violent communication.
( ) Bell Hooks tries to show us how we are taught since our childhood to have mistaken and false assumptions
about love and highlights how our society does not consider the importance and necessity of learning how to love
properly

A) “..All your life”
B) “..Blackbird fly Blackbird fly”
C) “..Into the light of the dark black night”
D) “..Blackbird singing in the dead of night”
E) “..Take these broken wings and learn to fly”

communication. They were like Martin Luther King and objectified as an exponent
We refuse to believe that the bank of justice is fallible. We refuse to believe that there are enough resources of opportunity
in this nation. So we've come to cash this check, a check that will give us the right to be claimed as the riches of freedom
and the security of justice.
a) the conquest of civil rights for the black population.
b) support for violent acts sponsored by blacks in urban spaces.
c) the supremacy of religious institutions among the southern black community.
d) the incorporation of blacks into the labor market.
e) the acceptance of black culture as representative of the American way of life.
3) The struggles for civil rights in the United States in the 1960s (20th century) had, among their central
characteristics, the
a) absence of women and maintenance of the patriarchal character of North American society.
b) defense of the interests of large industrial corporations and questioning of labor legislation.
c) union between the environmentalist and gay movements and the choice of the rainbow as a common symbol of these
two groups.
d) proposal for peaceful solutions to the internal American conflicts and the insistence on a bellicose international policy.
e) mobilization of North American blacks in the search for the expansion of their rights and for the end of segregationist
racial laws
4) In: Two characters — on opposing sides of a coin — undisputably allude to Martin Luther King Jr. and
Malcolm X. Professor Xavier parallels the former peace-keeper and activist, while the latter is designed to emulate
the man more willing to use physical force to make a statement. The idea is constructed around which of the
following rhetorical strategies?
A. analysis
B. allegory
C. narration
D. metaphor
E. cause and effect
