1) Match.
1. My computer is slow
2. The applications won’t install
3. Dowloads are taking forever
4. Mathias is biting his nails
5. Vitória is scratching her head.
6. Eduardo is tapping his foot.
( ) It may be because your computer doesn’t have enough
hard drive space.
( ) It probably means he is nervous
( ) Maybe it means she’s confused
( ) It could be a malware or too many start-up items
( ) It must mean he’s impatient
( ) It might be a connectivity problem or maybe you’re
inadvertently downloading or uploading anything.
2) As palavras abaixo representam as etapas mais importantes na programação de um computador. Leia o
texto a seguir e preencha as lacunas com a palavra correta.
problem - programmer - instructions - debugger - flowchart - machine code
A COMPUTER’S JOB
1 A computer can’t think. It merely performs the instructions given by the
(1) _____________.It is the programmer then who thinks and solves problems, following the steps below.
First, the programmer must define the (2) ______________________ clearly. He or she should always start by
trying to understand the problem, and then he or she has to determine how to solve it.
Then, the programmer must formulate an algorithm, which may be stated in terms of a step-bystep set of (3)
_________used to solve the problem. The logical sequence of these
instructions can be described by a diagrammatic representation called (4)_____________.
After that, the programmer must translate the algorithm or flowchart into a computer program. To do so, he or she
writes detailed instruction for the computer, using one of the many programming languages available. After it is
in one of the programming languages, the source program is converted into a (5) ______________________ by
means of a compiler, generating the object module or object program. The best compilers usually include an
integrated (6)________________________ which detects syntax errors called bugs.
Finally, the programmer adds the data to the program and runs the job completely. The computer will then perform
the calculation necessary to solve the problem.
3) Classifique, nos segmentos abaixo, os modais em negrito segundo a legenda a seguir.
a- capacidade / incapacidade
b- possibilidade / probabilidade
c- sugestão / recomendação

What is Alzheimer’s disease?
There are many types and causes of dementia, but Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form, accounting for
between 60 and 70 per cent of all cases.
Common early symptoms of Alzheimer’s include short-term memory loss, apathy and depressed mood, but these
symptoms are often just seen as being a part of normal ageing, making early diagnosis difficult.
Doctors diagnose Alzheimer’s on the basis of medical examination, patient history and cognitive tests, and can
use imaging to rule out other forms of dementia. However, a definitive diagnosis of Alzheimer’s is only possible
after death, when examination of brain tissue can reveal whether a person had the deposits of amyloid and tau
proteins that are characteristic of the condition.
Source http://advances.sciencemag.org/content/5/1/eaau3333(adapted)
5) Considering the text above, Alzheimer’s disease has only a definitive diagnosis when
a) it causes problems with thinking and behavior.
b) it accounts sixty percent to eighty percent of old age population.
c) it develops fast and gets worse over time, becoming severe enough to interfere with daily tasks.
d) an analyse of the brain tissue made through the deposits of the amyloid and tau proteins after people die.
e) the deposits of amyloid and tau accumulate in the brain tissue for one decad
6) Which is the option that shows a verb with the same idea of can in the sentence “…brain tissue can reveal
whether a person had the deposits of amyloid and tau proteins…”?
a) You ought to drive more carefully.
b) I have to be back at 10 o’clock.
c) The girls could play tennis when they were younger.
d) Sheyla is able to do that in less than an hour.
e) The boy doesn’t have to call a taxi.
7) In “Candidates can also check Internet job sites and the classified ads in local newspapers as
well”, the modal verb can is replaced, without change in meaning, by
(A) should
(B) must
(C) will
(D) may
(E) need
8) The use of the modal verb may in “which may explain the big rise in bar staff” (paragraph 6) indicates
that
a) It is mandatory to explain the big rise in bar staff.
b) It is necessary to explain the big rise in bar staff.
c) It is permitted to explain the big rise in bar staff.
d) It is possible to explain the big rise in bar staff.
9) Besides being funny, comics often expresses criticism. The comic strip criticizes men’s incapacity
to take the following action:
(A) resist what alienates them
(B) confront what fools them
(C) avoid what confuses them
(D) fight what baffles them
10) The modal verb “should” could be replaced, with no change in meaning, with:
(A) ought to
(B) would
(C) must
(D) had to

  • 3. What is Alzheimer’s disease? There are many types and causes of dementia, but Alzheimer’s disease is the most common form, accounting for between 60 and 70 per cent of all cases. Common early symptoms of Alzheimer’s include short-term memory loss, apathy and depressed mood, but these symptoms are often just seen as being a part of normal ageing, making early diagnosis difficult. Doctors diagnose Alzheimer’s on the basis of medical examination, patient history and cognitive tests, and can use imaging to rule out other forms of dementia. However, a definitive diagnosis of Alzheimer’s is only possible after death, when examination of brain tissue can reveal whether a person had the deposits of amyloid and tau proteins that are characteristic of the condition.
