HEALTHY HABITS: ANALYSING DATA
GENERAL INFORMATION
When science teachers teach about biology with students 14-15 years old, we spend lots of hours
speaking and learning about healthy and unhealthy habits. At this age it becomes important to pay
attention and teach about possible new habits for young people as smoking, drinking, eating fad
food and sweet drinks.
The truth is that if only teachers explain how bad is everything sometimes this information become
less important, for this reason, the aim of this project is to involve the student in the learning process
because at the end, they are the protagonist to involve other teenagers.
The objective of this project is to connect students in order to speak, analyze and share data about
- Their own habits (individual)
- Their country (searching public governmental information)
This project has three basic steps. The first one is to work searching and analyzing data. The second
step has the objective to share this information between students of two different countries to find
the common points and the particularities they have.
Once they get this information, the last step is to develop, all together a campaign directed to
teenager trying to make them aware about small things they can do to have good healthy habits.
Target students and subjects related
- Students 14-15 years’ old
- Biology
- English
- Two partners involved
- Students will work in 3-4 persons/group - 6 groups per classroom group
MAIN OBJECTIVES
Make students aware about healthy and unhealthy habits
Competences related
- Mathematic competence: students have to analyze data
- Digital competence: During this project student have to use different kind of digital
tools.
- Learning to learn: learning process born from students. They learn about health while
they do the activities.
Social and civic competences: students will become aware about how important is in a
society (not only for themselves) to have (in general) a good health and they will
understand why governments develop so many campaigns to achieve this.
BASIC ORGANIZATION
Temporization
o October: Nutrition
o December: smoking / drinking
o February: sport activity
Activities
o Nutrition:
 First step: recollecting data
 Diabetes
 Hypercholesterolemia
 Characteristics of a usual menu: how many portions they eat
during a week of: meat, fruits, vegetables, lactic, fat,
carbohydrates… /
 Second step: analyzing data:
 Doing graphics and tables (blog)
 Third step: Comparing and sharing
 Videoconference to share graphics and data
 Poster elaboration based on data: students have to do a poster
(online and working together) in which they will expose the
conclusions. (blog)
o Smoking and drinking
 First step: recollecting data and information
HEALTHY HABITS: ANALYSING DATA
 Poll: students have to create a poll to pass to other students
about what they know about the effects of the alcohol and
smoking and also about their habits. (blog)
 Second step: analyzing data
 Students have to do a CMAP in which they have to explain why
alcohol and tobacco are bad for the body and also to expose the
results of the poll (blog)
 Third step: sharing data
 Videoconference to comment all CMAPs.
 Students have to decide and agree about conclusions (blog)
o Sport activity
 First step: Recollecting data
 Poll: students have to create a poll and pass it to other students
to know how many times a week they practice sport and what
kind of sport.
 Heart activity: students will do an experimental activity about
sport and blood pressure. They will analyze what happens with
blood pressure when they do a sport activity. At the end, they
will get lot of data about max pressure, min pressure, pulsations
and corporal mass index, recover time,
 Second step: analyzing data
 Students have to do some graphics to represent the results they
got in the poll and in the “heart activity”.
 Third step: sharing data
 Students expose their conclusions in a videoconference
 Students debate
 At the end they have to accord about the most important
conclusions.
o Final project
 Students (mixed groups) have to create a short video as a public
advertising in which they have to comment the basic conclusions
accorded during this project!
Students organization
o First and second step activities: classroom groups (3-4 students per group)
o Third step activities: mixed groups (2 students from ___ + 2 students from
Igualada)
o Students will create a blog where they will share all information.
EXPECTED RESULTS
I expect from this project:
What How
Involve students in their own learning process They will develop the activities working in
groups
Get English as a usual language with /between
students.
Using English as a language during all activities.
Work cooperatively Students share information and produce their
own learning products with other students
To improve digital competences Because we will use different digital tools:
blogs, videoconference, drive, digital poster
app,…
Make students aware about their health and
their habits
Doing debates and sharing real information
about their habits and statistics of our
countries.
