In this course, we will toggle between working to understand science
communication and to do science communication. This project addresses the
former goal: you will be using a rhetorical lens to analyze a scientific article
(which of course first requires understanding that science is a rhetorical
enterprise), along with a popularization of that scientific article.
PROJECT DELIVERABLE
Write a comparative analysis of a scientific article and its popular
“accommodation,” focusing on the rhetorical moves native to both contexts.
The paper should begin by explaining why (from your perspective as either a
scientist or humanist/journalist) it’s important to do such rhetorical analysis.
You should start by finding a scientific article and its popular
“accommodation.” Probably the easiest way to do this is to look for
popularizations first, then track back to the scientific article they’re
discussing. Popularizations can be found on the National Geographic
Phenomena blog, the Nature editorial section, and the Science section of The
New York Times or other national newspapers.
Next, you’ll want to separately break down the rhetorical moves of each
piece. (Note that it’s not very rhetorically minded to speak about a
popularization as a “dumbing down” of the scientific article; as the readings
we’ll be doing for class show, each has very different audiences and
purposes.)
I do not require certain page lengths or word counts; however, I imagine
that to do a good job at this (making appropriate analytical claims and
providing evidence), your paper would likely need to be at least 4 pages.

Understanding the process that undergirds principles of research is a primary objective for this course. This project includes a thorough review of literature related the Counseling field. This project should include (1) a title page; (2) an abstract; (3) an introduction to the paper; (4) the review of literature; (5) a methods section; (6) a complete list of references used.
The paper that you will submit should be organized to carefully review research done on a particular topic of your choosing. In the review of literature, you will find it easier and more consistent to use the past tense when describing studies because they have already been completed. Therefore, you should write in the past tense for a scholarly audience, and should use clear and short sentences that generally avoid the use of personal pronouns (e.g., “I”). APA guidelines specify that your manuscript should be double spaced throughout, left justified (with regular “ragged right” margins), and margins should be set to 1 inch on all sides. Please check the Publication Manual of the APA.
Structure of the Paper
Title Page
Title. The title should summarize the main idea of the paper and include the main topic and actual theoretical issue investigated. Good titles are short (< 20 words) and would serve as a type of index of the main issues covered, including the nature of the tasks, participants, or other important variables. Type the title centered, in upper and lower cases, double-spaced.
Running head. Each page of your manuscript has a brief “title” (running head) printed in the upper right hand corner of the manuscript. It should be a maximum of 50 characters, and be followed by the specific page number for that page. A notation as to the specific Running head should be located in all caps, flush left at the top of the title page. For example, on your title page you would show (in the upper left hand corner):

Understanding the process that undergirds principles of research is a primary objective for this course. This project includes a thorough review of literature related the Counseling field. This project should include (1) a title page; (2) an abstract; (3) an introduction to the paper; (4) the review of literature; (5) a methods section; (6) a complete list of references used.
The paper that you will submit should be organized to carefully review research done on a particular topic of your choosing. In the review of literature, you will find it easier and more consistent to use the past tense when describing studies because they have already been completed. Therefore, you should write in the past tense for a scholarly audience, and should use clear and short sentences that generally avoid the use of personal pronouns (e.g., “I”). APA guidelines specify that your manuscript should be double spaced throughout, left justified (with regular “ragged right” margins), and margins should be set to 1 inch on all sides. Please check the Publication Manual of the APA.
Structure of the Paper
Title Page
Title. The title should summarize the main idea of the paper and include the main topic and actual theoretical issue investigated. Good titles are short (< 20 words) and would serve as a type of index of the main issues covered, including the nature of the tasks, participants, or other important variables. Type the title centered, in upper and lower cases, double-spaced.
Running head. Each page of your manuscript has a brief “title” (running head) printed in the upper right hand corner of the manuscript. It should be a maximum of 50 characters, and be followed by the specific page number for that page. A notation as to the specific Running head should be located in all caps, flush left at the top of the title page. For example, on your title page you would show (in the upper left hand corner):

The requirements for this project will mirror the requirements for all graduate papers. The

example, block quotations and the list of complete citations. Citations will conform to the
Turabian format whether you choose to use the Parenthetical/References style or the more

II. Review of the Literature (3-5 pages): All research projects include a literature review to
set out for the reader what knowledge exists on the subject under study and helps the

thoughtful study of what has been written, a summary of the arguments that exist (whether
you agree with them or not), and are arranged thematically. The literature review is not an
annotated bibliography and should be written in coherent narrative style. At the end of the
summary, there should still be gaps in the literature that you intend to fill with your research.

Writing a Research Essay in International Relations and Political Science
This is some basic advice on writing an essay in International Relations. The advice is generic, and obviously particular assignments, topics, questions have their own requirements – but this general advice should apply most of the time.
Be aware of what a criteria grading sheet looks like, as this sets out the way in which the essay will be graded. The standard grading sheet looks like this, and you will notice that there are four separate criteria. We will deal with each in turn.
1. Structure/Organization: Have you answered the question? Do you have a clear argument that you defend throughout? Is it well organized with appropriate use of paragraphs?
2. Research: Are you demonstrating research skills? Have you used a range of sources? Is it thoroughly referenced, using an appropriate system, with a bibliography?
3. Content: Do you set out clear arguments/evidence to support your position? Have you considered counter-arguments/evidence? Is their evidence of critical thinking?
4. Presentation: Is the paper well-written? Is it proof-read for grammar and spelling errors?
1. Structure/Organisation
Essays need a clear and concise introduction, which sets out a position: the thesis or argument that the essay will defend. If a question has been set, the introduction needs to clearly answer this question. It does not provide a broad introduction to the topic (avoid waffle or ‘flowery’ introductions), but rather, specifies the particular position that the essay will pursue. The essay then defends this position clearly throughout! I strongly suggest beginning the essay with the line “This essay argues…”. If you can clearly set out your position at the start, it will solve a lot of the structural problems that many essays have. You can then use the rest of the introduction to expand on your argument, detail the case material you are using to support your position, explain how your position allows you to propose an answer to the question(if one is set), and outline the structure of the essay. When outlining the structure of the essay, using first, second, third can be a clear and informative approach for the reader.
The main body of the essay is organised in short, sharp, concise paragraphs. It is important to consistently link the material, ideas, theories, concepts, debates, arguments, evidence, and case studies that you evaluate in the main body of the essay back to the question, and to your argument. Though different courses and different types of written assignments have different objectives, normally it is a good idea to have a balance between theoretical/conceptual debates and discussion, and empirical evidence. - 1. ENGL 318/JAMM 328 | pg 1 PROJECT 1 [Persuasion in Scientific & Public Contexts] 100 points. Initial draft due Wednesday, February 5 by 11:59 p.m. Final draft due Monday, February 10 by 11:59 p.m. In this course, we will toggle between working to understand science communication and to do science communication. This project addresses the former goal: you will be using a rhetorical lens to analyze a scientific article (which of course first requires understanding that science is a rhetorical enterprise), along with a popularization of that scientific article. PROJECT DELIVERABLE Write a comparative analysis of a scientific article and its popular “accommodation,” focusing on the rhetorical moves native to both contexts. The paper should begin by explaining why (from your perspective as either a scientist or humanist/journalist) it’s important to do such rhetorical analysis. You should start by finding a scientific article and its popular “accommodation.” Probably the easiest way to do this is to look for popularizations first, then track back to the scientific article they’re discussing. Popularizations can be found on the National Geographic Phenomena blog, the Nature editorial section, and the Science section of The New York Times or other national newspapers. Next, you’ll want to separately break down the rhetorical moves of each piece. (Note that it’s not very rhetorically minded to speak about a popularization as a “dumbing down” of the scientific article; as the readings we’ll be doing for class show, each has very different audiences and purposes.) I do not require certain page lengths or word counts; however, I imagine that to do a good job at this (making appropriate analytical claims and providing evidence), your paper would likely need to be at least 4 pages. GRADING CHART Your comparative analysis will be evaluated on the following qualities.
