This document discusses a multijurisdictional response to a syphilis outbreak in Australia. It notes that the outbreak began in northern Queensland in early 2011 and has since spread to the Northern Territory, Western Australia, and South Australia. The outbreak predominantly affects young indigenous Australians between the ages of 15-29 and initially was concentrated in remote areas but has spread to some cities. There have been 12 cases of congenital syphilis resulting in 5 deaths. Contributing factors discussed include population mobility, loss of focus on regular testing, family dynamics, education not targeting early sexual activity, and outdated antenatal care guidelines.
