African American History Month. It is an annual commemoration of achievements by African
Americans and a time for recognizing the central role of African Americans in United States
history. Black History Month had its origins in 1915 when Dr. Cater G. Woodson and his
colleagues founded the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History ( African American
History Month, 2014). This organization is now known as the Association for the Study of
African American Life and History. Through this organization, Dr. Cater G. Woodson played the
greatest role in helping all Americans know the Black past by initiating Negro History Week in
Washington, D.C. in February 1926 (Bunch, 2012). Dr. Woodson selected the week in February
