Problem-based learning (PBL) is a student-centered approach where students learn by working in groups to solve an open-ended problem. In PBL, the problem comes first before relevant material is taught. Students must examine the problem, determine what they need to learn, evaluate solutions, and solve the problem. PBL allows students to develop skills like teamwork, project management, communication, self-directed learning, critical thinking, and problem solving. When designing a PBL project, instructors articulate the learning outcomes, create a real-world problem for students to address, establish group work guidelines, and assess students on their work and that of their peers.
