The document discusses Asia Pulp & Paper's efforts to support sustainable peatland management in Indonesia. It details APP's sustainability roadmap and forest conservation policy, which include developing best practices for water management on peatlands through extensive data collection and monitoring. APP is also working to restore retired production areas and conduct research on alternative tree species and community-based restoration efforts to support Indonesia's goal of becoming carbon neutral.

4x LiDAR mapping between 2015-2019 to map to gather a series of
peat data in different conditions and interventions:
1. Data collected include peat distribution, topography and hydrology data.
2. Some 11,000 km flown over East Sumatra and West Kalimantan, in 2015
3. Flights are over APP suppliers’ concessions and surrounding areas on peat
4. LiDAR data coverage effectively ~4.5 million hectares

Restoration on Former Production Area
Challenge in Natural Succession
Natural succession taking place is mostly wild acacia, due to:
1. The abundance of acacia seedlings
2. The nature of acacia as pioneer species which can grow in
harsh condition.
To address this, APP is working together with an international
research institution, NUS Environmental Research Institute
(NERI).
Revegetation plot and enrichment activities in retired peat dome peaks
Wild acacia growing on retired
peat dome peaks with natural
succession approach (after 2 years)
In accordance to the Government Regulation and guidance, in
conducting peat restoration activities on peat dome peaks,
we adopt 2 approaches:
1. Establish revegetation plots and conduct enrichment
planting.
2. Natural succession / regeneration

Research on Alternative Species
Shorlisting tree species to only 5 species (originally 12 species)
4 trials that are conducted:
1. Species trials
2. Fertilizer trials
3. Spacing trials
4. Demonstration plantations
Trial plot area: 23 hectares with canal blocks to maintain water level at 25 cm.
One of the main challenges - the growth and yield of the trialed species
compared to the control species (Acacia Crassicarpa).
▪ To address this, we have been conducting research on Mychoriza, to boost
the growth of the trees on peat.
▪ Some species shows significant growth when treated with mychoriza – even
showing twice the growth compared to the one not treated with mychoriza.

Collaboration for Community-based Peat Protection & Restoration
Combining Science and Community-based approach on protection and restoration of Lowland and Peat Forests.
Project areas: Musi Banyuasin district and Banyuasin district, South Sumatra
Science collaborations:
1. Collaboration with P3SEKPI and Gadjah Mada University (UGM) to
develop effective, efficient and scientific justification strategy for
peat restoration program
2. The collaboration will also work with the Regional Peat Restoration
Team (TRGD) or district government to monitor peat restoration
effort on the field, and integrate the project into the provincial and
national target in peat restoration.
Community involvement:
1. Engagement with 3 villages in project areas on nurseries
management and compost production for their alternative
livelihood.
2. Including community members as part of SMART Patrol team
