FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE PRESS RELEASE
Sun Microsystems To Help Harrods of London Grow Multi-channel Business Through Integrated IT
Infrastructure
SOA-based Integration Suite To Optimize Online Retail Experience While Preserving Investment in Existing
IT Assets
NEW YORK – NATIONAL RETAIL FEDERATION CONFERENCE – January 17, 2006 – Sun Microsystems, Inc.
(NASDAQ: SUNW), the creator and leading advocate of Java (TM) technology, today announced that Harrods,
the world famous London department store belonging to the Harrods group of companies, has selected the
Sun Java (TM) Integration Suite to help support and enhance its growing multi-channel retail operations.
Harrods, like many retailers today, is faced with the challenge of creating a more efficient business
model that both improves customer service and reduces the cost of ongoing operations. To address these
challenges, Harrods is expanding its use of information technology, and has selected a suite of products
from Sun that will help to preserve its existing IT investments while enhancing business agility and
improving customer experience.
After a thorough evaluation, Harrods selected the Sun Java Integration Suite, formerly the SeeBeyond (TM)
Integrated Composite Application Network (ICAN) Suite, for both its footprint in the marketplace as well
as its rich integration and composite application development capabilities. As a part of the Sun (TM)
Retail Integration Architecture software, the Sun Java Integration Suite will provide the
Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA)-based foundation to create a 'single view' of customer, product and
promotional data, powering both Harrods' multi-channel marketing strategy and the optimization of its
on-line retailing capabilities.
"With the motto 'All Things, For All People, Everywhere' one can only imagine the abundance of
departments and customers that we deal with on a day to day basis. This demands a reliable and integrated
IT infrastructure that will allow for the adoption of new technology while preserving both our existing
IT investments as well as the customer experience," said David Llamas, chief information officer,
Harrods. "Harrods is looking forward to leveraging the comprehensive, standards-based Java Integration
Suite from Sun to handle the demands and increase the efficiency of our growing, multi-channel,
international business."
The first phase of the deployment will entail customer data integration creating a customer-centric view
of legacy system data to support the next wave of growth anticipated by Harrods. This single, common view
of customer, product and promotional data will span back-end systems from both brick-and-mortar and
on-line sites.

"Harrods' selection of Sun's Java Integration Suite is a testament to the depth and breadth of its
capabilities and its broad adoption in a number of markets, including retail," said Larry Singer, senior
vice president and strategic insight officer, Sun Microsystems, Inc. "We look forward to helping Harrods
establish a common view of data across the organization to more effectively serve its customer base and
reach the next level of integrated multi-channel retail operations."
