Along with that we have provided tools such as SUSE Manager to simplify installation, operation and maintenance of the environment. We back all that up with a support lifecycle for stability. We are beginning to see the emergence of 2 new paradigms – the software defined infrastructure and the emergence of cloud-native applications. These new approaches require new tools at the operating system and application delivery layers. The traditional role of the OS – APIs and services to control the infrastructure – are addressed by tools such as OpenStack and containerization engines. SUSE OpenStack Cloud addresses this need today by making it easy to deploy across a wide range of software defined solutions such as hypervisors, software defined storage such as SUSE Enterprise Storage and open source and proprietary networking solutions. As we move toward containerized application development, we see two closely related solutions – SUSE Container as a Service Platform will combine a container optimized version of SUSE Linux with Kubernetes and an industry standard container engine to enable the creation and deployment of cloud native applications that can run across private data centers and public clouds. - #16 Analyze your current point of service environment Is it supported and secure? Does it allow for new and modern customer services? Is it still economic? SUSE Linux Enterprise Point of Service Benefits SUSE Linux Enterprise POS scales from old Hardware to the latest systems, means you can re-purpose old machines for your POS servers. You can lengthen the lifecycles of your hardware because SUSE Linux Enterprise easily runs on older machines and is backed by seven years of support. This is even more true for SLEPOS because the POS images normally are small and don´t need huge capacities. Flexibility: With SLEPOS, you can easily create and deploy tailored images, which is not possible that way e.g. with WEPOS or POSReady 2009. SLEPOS uses the image builder KIWI which lets you automatically generate your image templates, while with WEPOS you have to manually redo and adapt your images. And, with SLEPOS you can flexibly customize and tailor your images as you need them and as they fit for your HW, from very small footprints to even large images. Also the deployment of new/patched images works automatically and makes administration and maintenance really easy. Finally you have different deployment options – as said more or less automatically via Admin Server, but also offline via Media or even USB. Security/reliability: As you can build very small images, the danger of malicious attacks is much smaller. SLEPOS 11 comes with encrypted LDAP directory, and the systems do exchange security certificates. SLEPOS enables for Payment Card Industry (PCI) Data Security Standard support. It surely also ships all security tools delivered with SUSE Linux Enterprise Server, like VPN, Secure Shell, integrated firewall, etc ... Last, not least, SLEPOS is based on a proven and new “real” server operating system. (while e.g. WEPOS and POSReady 2009 are based on the old XP operating system). Moreover, you can use your SLEPOS operating system during your subscription period for whatever HW system you want – means it is not tied to a specific “machine” like WEPOS (OEM preload), and you can buy new HW or re-purpose old HW as often as you want.
